11 Things to Make You Feel Better on Monday, November 10

It’s cold. It’s dark. It’s Monday.

We feel you.

Oh, and we’re also heading into one of the busiest times of the year for young professionals. So we have that going for us.

But in case you’re busy throwing yourself a pity party, we’re here to interject with a Monday’s worth of perspective.

All things considered, life could be a lot worse. So here are 11 reasons why you should suck it up and make today your happy day…

1. You Have a Job
You may have cursed the world when your alarm jolted you to life in the pitch black early morning. But at least you have a job. And while Statistics Canada released a report on Friday revealing promising employment growth, 6.5 per cent of your fellow Canadians still remain unemployed. And there’s nothing fun about that title.

2. The New Reese’s Peanut Butter Spread
If the thought of picking up a jar on your way home doesn’t brighten your Monday, we don’t know what will.

3. Watching the News for 10 Minutes Will Make Your Life Seem Amazing
From political unrest and injustice to accidents, murders, and poverty, watching the news for 10 minutes could depress you – or it could make you appreciate everything you have. The choice is yours.

4. It’s Almost Ski Season
We know the memory of your last BBQ of the season is still a fresh wound, but at least ski (and après ski) season’s almost here. New reasons to weekend road trip are just a snowfall away.

5. If You Get Sick, You’re Covered
At the end of the day, you’ve got your health. But even if you didn’t (or any benefits either), at least we’re lucky enough to live in a country with free access to healthcare.

6. The New Dumb and Dumber Movie Hits Theatres on Friday
That’s something, right? Even if it took 20 years to make…

7. Movember Offers Ample Entertainment Value
Whether on the subway, in a meeting, or at a bar after work, the month of November offers the entertainment value of a buffet of moustaches – the good, bad and ugly – to stare at.

8. You Can Drink Water Until You Can’t Drink Water Any More
If you’re complaining about the cost of that bottle of Fiji water or annoyed that the convenience store doesn’t carry the flavour of San Pellegrino you love, consider yourself lucky that you have access to clean drinking water in the first place. IN A TAP. ‘Cause 780 million people across the world don’t, and more than 3.4 million people die each year from water sanitation and hygiene-related causes.

9. You Still Have Time to Make Your Mark
Don’t feel like you’re where you should be by this point in your life? Well neither were a lot of people, including Hollywood funny ladies Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Kristin Wiig, who didn’t become famous until after they turned 30. Vera Wang didn’t start designing wedding dresses until she was 40, and Samuel L. Jackson only scored bit parts as an actor until Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever when he was 43 years old.

10. You’re on the Internet Right Now
Internet access is taken for granted as much as electricity these days. But only 70 per cent of Americans have Internet access, and by the end of 2014 the United Nations predicts that 60 per cent of the world’s population will remain unconnected.

11. You Can Read This
If you’re reading this, then you’re not included in the 775 million adults in the world who are illiterate. Even further, be grateful that you can see in the first place; every year more than 50,000 Canadians will lose their sight.

Have we brought you back down to earth yet?
