The Fat Badger Brings a Taste of British Comfort Food to Vancouver

Owned and operated by the folks behind West End’s Espana (which always has a line-up out the door), The Fat Badger offers up a virtual taste of proper British cuisine and style in the heart of the city (added bonus: it won’t break the bank).

Speaking of style, the space is cozy right down to the fireplace, central communal table and authentic pub-style décor (we’re talking Hunter green banquettes, dark wood accents and tastefully appointed accents throughout). It isn’t trying to be a fussy place, rather a comfortable place to head to on a date for a quick post-work bite or with a group of friends for a few pints (they’ve got nine on-tap) and some crafty bar snacks.

You’ll definitely want to taste test their take on the French-fry sandwich (dubbed the chip butty), or perhaps a Scotch egg is more your style. A must-order off their main menu is the Berkshire pork shoulder, or their British-style beer battered cod and chips, perfectly crisp on the outside and moist on the inside and served alongside a generous portion of, what else, chips.

Save room for The Fat Badger’s black pudding and chef/owner Neil Taylors take on poutine (with paneer curds, chicken tikka masala and house-cut fries). It’s a decidedly appropriate nod to the influence that Indian cuisine has had within the British dining scene.

Still hungry and just looking for an excuse to linger? Be sure to sample one of their rotating desserts or tuck into a night cap on what we like to call the “petite patio” out front. Walk off any feeling of excess by taking a post-bite stroll down to the Seawall and you’re golden.

The Fat Badger is open from 5pm until 11pm, 7 days a week.
