Here’s a trio of the hottest things you can do on Monday.*
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Where: The Horseshoe Tavern
Amazingly, there was a time when bands became famous through the hard work of record labels and PR agencies. Of course, that was before CYHSY invented DIY Internet stardom. Over the years they’ve proven they weren’t just the first great viral sensation, but a lasting peripheral rock ensemble capable of exploiting a very singular (if not sonically offensive) vocal presence, and loose arrangements that don’t always sound on time or in tune, to purpose album after album of energy, exuberance, and songs really easy to love. Now if only the exercise of determining their moniker had been such an effortless success. Read more here.
30,000 Free Books
Where: 306 Gerrard St E.
This one’s pretty straightforward. It’s the Yonge St. Mission’s 10th annual community book fair, which means they’ll be giving out, you guessed it, some 30,000 books for free over the next four days. There’s a donation fee of $2 to get through the door but after that, you can pick up as many books as you think you’ll read (which is probably about 10 more than you actually will read).
The Table Setters
Where: Insomnia, 563 Bloor St. West
A one-night event that sees Chef Joe Friday takeover Insomnia’s kitchen to offer a five-course menu. Chef Friday as lived all over the world and is bringing his experiences to the table. Expect food inspired by North Carolina, France, Japan, and more to come together in ‘street-snack’ form. Reservations and walk-ins available.
*Of course, no one would blame you for staying in to start working on your photobombing.
