Notable’s Best of 2013: Calgary

Since the year deserves a proper farewell, we’ve rounded up the Best of Notable 2013 for you to have a look back at the year that was. Don’t linger in the past too long, though, ’cause we can’t wait to start turning 2014 into our most memorable year yet! And we hope you’ll be right there with us making it happen. Here’s what went down in Calgary…

Bars
This year we reviewed some of the city’s most notable bars in town. We checked out the top venues to see live music, the coolest new wine shops, the classic places to stop for a pint and our favourite spot to see a band on a Saturday afternoon. We also gave readers the lowdown on the hippest cocktail joints around town, and in November we even toured a local brewery for a 101 on making artisan beer.

The Top 5:

Bar C
Village Brewery
Milk Tiger Lounge
National on 10th
Wild Rose Brewery

There’s no doubt that Calgary’s cocktail and craft beer scene will continue to grow in 2014, which you’ll hear about from us first.

Restaurants
There is never a dull moment in our restaurant scene; sometimes it feels like Calgary is opening a new restaurant every week. This year we covered Muse’s truffle fest, Ki’s fusion of Eastern and Western cuisine and Ox & Angela‘s love for Sherry. We even tried to hunt down the mysterious dine and dasher who was making appearances at some of Calgary’s top dining establishments.

The Top 5:

downtownfood
Cuisine et Chateau
Cilantro
Food Trucks
La Boulangerie and Yann’s

With the New Year comes many exciting new restaurant openings. In January and February you can look forward to reviews of the newest restaurant concepts happening and a quirky interview with one of the city’s top sommeliers.

Events
2013 was brimming with events in Calgary and we attended everything from the Glenbow’s Schmancy gala to the celebrity burger competition at Clive Burger for the Grow Calgary fundraiser. We showed our true Western spirit during Stampede, dined at Dine en Blanc in the park, attended some of the craziest apocalyptic costume parties this Halloween, and managed to keep going strong through a disastrous flood.

The Top 5:

RedBull Thre3style National Final
Clive Burger and Grow Calgary Collaboration
Cyclepalooza
Doors Open YYC
Adults Only at the Science Centre

We can’t wait to share all the details on fun parties and events coming to Calgary during this upcoming year. If you’re still on the lookout for something to do on New Year’s Eve, look no further than our New Year’s Eve Guide to send off 2013 in style.
