Vancouver Weekender: March 14 through 16, 2014

Friday

Put on your dancing shoes and head out to the SHIFT n’ SHOUT Karaoke Dance Party in support of Shift Theatre. It takes place at Sideshow Studios (15th and West 2nd) and is guaranteed to get you off the couch and at the mic crooning to your heart’s content. Grab some friends (and a few drinks) and take over the stage as part of their ‘Dareoke’ contest, or if you’re feeling shy about it, donate and pick the best/worst tune for a brave singer to perform. Regardless, laughs will be had by all.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

CelticFest is still going strong at various venues around the city all weekend and definitely not something you’ll want to miss. Be it live music you’re after, entertainment, dancing, drinking or a mix of all of the above, CelticFest is worth checking out.

Get a taste for island life this weekend and head to Salt Spring in the City happening at the Heritage Hall at Main Street from March 14th to March 16th. This eclectic mix of arts and crafts showcases the hottest artisans from this stunning island with over 30 unique brands to discover. From the modern to the rustic, chic to traditional, there’s something to suit everyone’s fancy. Cost is $2 with admission proceeds donated to the Save on Meats Token program.

Also taking place this weekend, the Vancouver International Dance Festival is in full-swing (literally) and presents an extraordinary roster of dance artists and creators from March 7 to 29, 2014. Performed in venues across the city, and featuring a diverse wealth of free and paid events, the festival includes such international icons as China’s Guangdong Modern Dance Company and Spain’s flamenco Israel Galvan, as well as local favourites Dancers Dancing, Kokoro Dance Company and more.

Saturday

Get geared up in green and head to Stanley Park for the St. Patrick’s Day 5K fun run (starts at 9:30am at the Stanley Park Pavillion). Featuring an Urban Fare zone for post-race refuelling as well as a Granville Island Brewing after party, it’s our kind of race.

Feed The People charity is set to celebrate its 2nd anniversary in serious style at The Parlour Restaurant in Yaletown. This non-profit organization that asks people to give back to their communities on their birthdays is asking for young professionals to roll up their sleeves and dig into some pizza-making for a cause. Get saucy, have fun making new friends and relish the fact that all food will benefit those in need in our city. It promises to be Feed The People’s biggest event to date – you don’t want to miss out.

Get your theatre fix this weekend and don’t miss the last performances of Driving Miss Daisy at The Granville Island Stage. The beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning play follows the charming and moving adventures of a Southern matriarch and her chauffeur over their 25-year friendship, and reveals the power of the human heart to overcome prejudices and open itself to new possibilities.

Sunday

Don’t miss this year’s 10th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade that takes over pretty much all of the city’s downtown core. It promises to be the biggest parade yet, drawing in upward of 200,000 spectators to cheer the more than 2000 parade participants.  You’ll see award-winning pipe and drum bands, Irish Wolf Hounds, drill teams, dancers, stilt walkers and more.

This Sunday, do some good if you’re up to it, by participating in the 13th Annual Climb the Wall: The Stairclimb for Clean Air. This event (hosted at the Vancouver Wall Centre) sees hundreds of participants hike their way up the 48-storey building (that’s 491 feet of vertical). Registration is only $25 (with a minimum $125 fundraise required). To learn more and score a spot, email stairclimb@bc.lung.ca today.
