These Were Just Voted the Nicest and Coolest Public Washrooms in Canada

Washrooms will forever be a source of both reassurance and anxiety. If you’re a woman, they’re one of the very first things you notice about a guy’s place. If you’re a chronic festival-goer, they’re the bane of your existence. And if you’re simply a patron at a public establishment, from an airport to a pub to hotel lobby, they can be the difference between being relieved and getting scared sh**less.

Which is why bestrestroom.com is closing in on their 6th annual Cintas award for Canada’s Best Restroom.

According to the contest website, “While most people would likely characterize their trip to the restroom as a fairly unremarkable experience, we at Cintas think it should be unforgettable…Now, a growing number of companies are going the extra mile to create the most memorable restrooms imaginable, and…Cintas is on a mission to locate Canada’s porcelain pioneers who are taking dramatic steps to create unforgettable facilities.”

Cintas is not, as the Brits would say, just taking the piss; after taking nominations from across the country, just a few days ago they announced the five finalists and are now accepting votes until October 9th, with the 2015 Lord of the Loo being announced in the fall.

So, if you give a sh*t about the condition of our country’s crappers, you might want to pop in and drop a vote.

Here are the finalists (shout-out to Alberta for locking down three of the five spots!):

Bank & Baron P.U.B. – Calgary, Alberta
Built in 1931, this reclaimed Bank of Nova Scotia…boasts unique art deco architecture. Guests find a fanciful experience in the washroom, with dazzling gold-trimmed mirrors against shining silver leaf wallpaper…dark wooded stalls and marbled countertops…

Edmonton Renaissance Airport Hotel – Edmonton, Alberta
Black tiled walls, marble sinks and full-length mirrors are “sealed with a kiss” as Ruby Red lips are the statement throughout the washroom from wall art to a full-size couch. Plush red stools and red countertops provide a private space for visitors to freshen up with personal vanity mirrors.

1000 Islands Duty Free – Lansdowne, Ontario
This Duty Free Shop gives customers a “swell farewell” with their clean and inviting restroom that’s incredibly well designed.

The Tommyfield Gastro Pub – Calgary, Alberta
…a trip to the loo takes visitors “across the pond” in seconds. Each private stall is contained in one of the iconic red telephone booths, with photos of old England lining the walls.

BNA Brewing Company & Eatery – Kelowna, British Columbia
Located inside a historic building that was once home to The British North American Tobacco Company…you feel like you’ve stepped backstage at the theatre, with bulb lights around the mirrors and beautiful exposed brick…standout features include faucets that come directly out of the mirrors…entrances on both sides and a three-faucet trough-style sink.
