The iconic Pirelli calendar wasn’t always known for breaking barriers when it comes to beauty standards.

Since 1963 until roughly three years ago, the Italian tire company’s annual calendar was almost synonymous with scantily-clad 20-something models.

However, Pirelli has since changed its tune.

For instance, in 2013, they featured a pregnant Adriana Lima. Yes, a pregnant Victoria’s Secret model is still a Victoria’s Secret model – still, it was a sign of things to come in terms of featuring a more diverse range of women.

In 2015, they included their first plus-size model and the 2016 calendar practically broke the internet when accomplished and notably not-modelesque women like Serena Williams and Ava Duvernay graced its pages.

But despite all the progress they’ve made, one barrier that remained to be broken was age.

Enter the 2017 calendar.

This year, Pirelli is driving a final nail in the coffin of sexist beauty standards by featuring iconic actresses of all ages, from Lupita Nyong’o to Helen Mirren.

Actresses over the age 40 are often overlooked in Hollywood, to put it nicely (see Amy Schumer’s ‘Last F*ckable Day’ sketch for a hilarious take on it), so it’s pretty awesome to see the calendar become a platform for celebrating beautiful women of all kinds.

“Beauty today is really twisted, for commercial reasons, so people think beautiful is what you see in advertising and in magazines — all these retouched women,” Pirelli calendar photographer Peter Lindbergh tells Vogue. 

“You have to be perfect, you have to be thin, you have to be young — you have to be all this, and this is bullsh*t,” he said.
