Chef Rob Thomas: Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur

Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur is ‘Chef Rob‘, who specializes in everything to do with food and healthy eating. It’s a pretty extensive list, so we’ll just recommend you read on to find out what makes his work so enjoyable…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
I do private in-home dining, parties, special events, interactive demonstrations and lessons, pop-ups, hospitality consulting, and guest chef appearances at events, on TV, radio, and magazines. I also plan and provide weekly meal plans for those looking for a balanced, nutritious and flavourful diet.

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
I wasn’t happy with my job so I decided to create my own. I took everything I liked about being a chef and put it all into one basket. I am inspired by my friends and family – they showed me love and support and believed in me as I began this journey

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
Every day is different. I like interacting with people and planning. The most challenging part is being both a chef and entrepreneur. Some days you have to be one more than the other. But I do love what I do, and not everyone can say that.

What is one sign that you’ve seen over the years to suggest that your work/life balance is off?
I plan my personal life in between work. Even when I travel for pleasure, it usually has to do with food. What can I say? I’m just passionate about food, so I’ve always felt balanced.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see the “Chef Rob” brand growing and emerging further into the media. I’d love to have a cooking show or contribute to a national magazine. As long as I can cook and travel, I’ll be happy.

What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
Working for yourself takes more time and discipline than you could imagine. It’s still an ongoing challenge, but I chose to embrace it all and take it on with a positive attitude… and very little sleep.

What does success look like to you? Does Money = Happiness?
Success to me is not about the money; it’s setting goals, achieving them, and being happy with your life.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
Most recently was having been selected from across Canada to be a guest chef at a 5-star Eldorado Royale resort in the Mayan Rivera. I hosted beach parties, cooking demos, and wine pairing dinners for a week. It was an unforgettable experience.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Stick to it. Nothing comes easy; it really does take time. Believe in yourself and surround yourself with positive people. Don’t let anyone tell you can’t do it.

Where is your favourite place to wine/ dine in your city and why?
Lots to choose from! Two of my favourites in Winnipeg are Segovia & Enoteca. I like sharing plates. Both have great food, drinks and atmosphere.

When you’re not working how do you love to spend your “Me” time?
I like a good workout and listening to music, and spending time with family and friends. But my best “me” time is when I am travelling.

Where is your favourite place to travel? Why?
I love the Caribbean and South America. I have family in the Caribbean and I love the food and weather; it’s part of my culture. In South America the food and culture sings to me as well. I just want to dance!

If you had to choose a theme song, what would it be?
Still D.R.E. by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Still being who you are, and no matter how much success you have, it’s about being real. And it’s a dope beat!

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing, what would you be doing?
I’d be travelling the world experiencing and sharing different cultures, creating my own media, or being an adventure tour guide.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
One I support is Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. It works to end child hunger by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need, every day. It’s important to me because I love children, and they need to know that someone cares about them.

What to you is notable?
The power of believing in yourself, chasing your dreams, and making it a reality. Staying true to who you are, and striving to be the best version of yourself.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
Android! Phone and tablet. It just works for me.
