Fans Furious After Katy Perry Makes Two Mental Health “Jokes” About Britney Spears

What was Katy Perry thinking?

Perry chose to use her time on the Grammys red carpet to take a jab at Britney Spears’ mental health not once, but twice. It’s been ten years since Britney Spears suffered a mental breakdown, very publicly and unfortunately. Perhaps the most documented moment of her breakdown was when Spears shaved her own head.

While speaking to Ryan Seacrest on E!, Perry joked about Spears’ breakdown after Seacrest asked Perry how her three-year break from music went. “That’s called taking care of your mental health… I haven’t shaved my head yet.” It wasn’t a momentary lapse in judgement because Perry later appeared on CBS and made another snide remark about shaving her head.

“It’s like the last colour in the spectrum that I can do,” she said of her new blond hair. “I’ve done all of them and the only thing left to do is shave my head, which I’m really saving for a public breakdown.”

It didn’t take long for people to take to Twitter to express their outrage about Perry’s poor taste, and the hashtag #KatyPerryIsOver began trending in minutes.

After all, Spears’ public meltdown was nothing to laugh about (though, somewhat sickeningly, the media had a heyday with it); it resulted in her losing physical custody of her kids, losing control of her finances and being admitted to the hospital and rehab. Since, Spears has made major strides. She regained custody of her sons, made a killer comeback and looks better and healthier than ever. In the decade since, society had also collectively made incredible strides to erode the long-held mental health stigma. We’re more aware than ever.

We’d like to think that someone as supposedly as forward-thinking as Perry would know better than to use her platform to both take cheap shots on a fellow female performer (at a time when the ladies in Hollywood need to unite more than ever) and to make jest of mental health issues.
