York University Mistakenly Sent 500 Students Acceptance Letters Who Didn’t Get In

Everyone who’s attended college or university remembers the feeling of opening a letter from the school of their dreams.

At first you felt panicked, unsure if you should open it because maybe you didn’t get in. And then you are overwhelmed with excitement once you finally open it and find out you’ve been accepted.

Well, imagine experiencing that roller coaster of emotions and then finding out a few days later that you didn’t actually get in.

That was the reality for 500 York University hopefuls this Tuesday. A mistake was made in the admissions process and the school had to send out apology emails to them because they didn’t actually get in.

“We really empathize that there’s a small group of students that got this message, and they get anxious and excited, and so we did do the outreach and tried to do it as quickly as possible,” said Jock Phippen, York’s director of student recruitment and admission, to the Toronto Star.

The mistake was made on Monday morning after admissions staff arrived at the school to take stock of all the applications that had arrived late Friday and over the weekend. All of these applicants, a majority of them high school students, were all sent acknowledgement emails and then acceptance emails by mistake, the Toronto Star reports.

Admission staff realized the mistake late Monday evening and had to send those applicants emails on Tuesday notifying them of the error.

“We’ve had a number of people who have contacted me directly,” Phippen told the Star. “Most have been fairly understanding, I would say, but truthfully it’s probably something that’s pretty disappointing for some of them as well.”

While this news would come as a let down to these students, Phippen did mention that this doesn’t mean these students are rejected – it just means the overall decision on their applications have yet to be decided.

The university has already received around 26,000 applications for the upcoming fall semester and yesterday marked the deadline for applications through the Ontario University Application Centre.
