Victoria Taylor: Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur

Victoria Taylor has made a career out of questioning our relationships between cities and landscape – crafting a narrative surrounding urban design with her thought-provoking work. Now, she’s getting ready to imbue these questions in the minds of attendees at Gladstone Hotel’s annual Grow Op exhibition, running this Thursday, April 23rd through Sunday, April 26th. With two masters under her belt – a Masters in Environmental Studies from York University and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Toronto – Victoria blends the realms of art and academia in her everyday life.

Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
I work with people – using living and non-living materials – to create visual changes in their outdoor spaces.

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
I started my own company to develop a design practice around food, art, ecology, and landscape. My initial inspiration came through learning about plants and understanding more about soil. And, in the broadest sense, caring about the health of people and the natural world.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The answer to both is, “Doing what I want!”

What is one sign that you’ve seen over the years to suggest that your work/life balance is off?
When I start to forget about friends or family…

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Living in Seville, Spain with my boyfriend, lemon trees, and lots of cats.

What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
Passing a five-hour exam about designing parking lots to get my professional license. I just put my head down and did it!

What does success look like to you? Does Money = Happiness?
Success is being inspired and healthy, while still being a good friend.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
I’d have to say the 110-foot long installation, Concrete Bloom Bursts, that I did for the 2012 Canada Blooms exhibition.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Be courageous. Be polite. Be persistent. Be political!

Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?
My roof has some stunning views!

When you’re not working how do you love to spend your “Me” time?
Not surprisingly, with my hands in the dirt.

Where is your favourite place to travel? Why?
My boyfriend’s farm in Prince Edward County. Best air. Best beaches. Best wine. Best people.

If you had to choose a theme song, what would it be?
“Dream  On” by Aerosmith.

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing, what would you be doing?
Playing music.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
It’s very important to be civically engaged. I support Toronto Park People because they encourage others to get involved in their local parks, and Kunstverein Toronto because they encourage people to think differently about art.

What to you is notable?
Having a unique, creative vision.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
Currently iPhone… but moving towards Android.
