Vancouver Weekender: October 9 through 12, 2014

Thanksgiving Long Weekend is here – we already know a lot of eating is on the schedule, but throw in a little boozy networking, shopping, a couple good parties, maybe a workout, and all around it’s looking like a perfectly balanced weekend amongst all the turkey.

THURSDAY
The end of the working week is in sight but in the world of young professionals, the lines between work and play can often become blurred. Grab some of your colleagues or industry friends and head to BCTIA’S Mega Mixer: TechBrew at CBC Studios. Leading innovators from top tech companies come together for a fun evening of networking and conversations.

FRIDAY
Nothing is better as an end of the week reward than a little shopping and, even better, major savings. Brunette Showroom, Privilege Clothing and Rainnie Marketing are joining forces to present Sale at 303. You’ll be sure to find huge discounts of up to 50% or more off retail prices on Vitamin A swimwear (hey, we are always thinking about taking off to our next vacation), BB Dakota, Zanerobe, G-Star and more.

One of Vancouver’s most iconic DJs is celebrating a milestone – turning 40! Fortune Sound Club throws DJ Flip Out a birthday bash at Happy Ending Fridays featuring a line-up of his own favourite DJs in the city tonight. If you’re looking for a little music to start your weekend, you will be in for some special sets from the likes of Nina Mendoza, Jay Swing, and Rob Rizk to name a few.

SATURDAY
Hockey Night in Canada is back – if you’re not already going to the game, throw on your jersey and take in the Vancouver Canucks regular season home opener against the Edmonton Oilers at our top three classic bar spots: Yaletown Brewery, Red Card Sports Bar at Moda Hotel, or the Charles Bar. Hot wings, beer and hockey – what more do you need?

Looking for date night ideas? It’s the last Saturday night to catch the Richmond Night Market until next year – load up on all the fried food, entertainment and, of course, the deals under the twinkling lights. You can never have enough false lashes, iPhone chargers, and other random finds for just a few bucks. The biggest market in Vancouver won’t be back again until next spring.

Or if you really want to let loose…

SUNDAY
If you’re wondering what all the hype is around the new spin studios popping up around the city, a good place to start will be Ride Cycle Club’s special Ride 101. Aside from learning the basics of spin, you’ll be sweating, yelling and feeling some sort of wonderful at this spin-meets-Victoria’s Secret Angel workout-meet-yogi 55-minute session.

Bright and early, you’ll feel like a champ for squeezing in a workout pre-turkey dinner. (A holiday ride session is also happening on Monday, just in case you need to burn off all the carbs). The class is often packed with young professionals and classes are even taught by many whose day jobs are quite notable – you never know who you will be sweating it out next to. Oh, and PS, first rides are on the house.

It’s another long weekend meaning the Slow Jam Sunday family will be throwing down one good party. If you can escape post-dinner board games with the fam jam, head over to the chosen location, Venue, and try your best to get in for their turkey work off party. This is a hard one to get in to but worth the a few minutes in the line-up, if you’re lucky enough.
