Vancouver Weekender: January 8 through 11, 2015

You know what today is, don’t you?

Yup, it’s the day that’s three days after the first episode of the 19th season of the Bachelor.

It’s also Thursday.

And while you might be trying to ease your way into 2015 with raw carrots and stingy budgets, the weekend waits for no one. In fact, your weekend starts right now, Vancouver…

THURSDAY

The Peak 100.7 and The Vogue Theatre are hosting #SingItFwd tonight.

Now in its fourth year, this musical charity night has been a sell out every time for reason. Raising funds and awareness for youth music education, the hot ticket will include a crowd of fans, community leaders, and local personalities. Expect Hey Ocean, Dustin Bentall, The Sheepdogs, and more to hit the stage.

For a different kind of musical delight tonight, get cultured in your own city at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

The World of Shakespeare is a part of the Tea and Trumpets series and performed by Gaze, Gordon Gerrard, and Eve-Lyn de la Haye. It’s an afternoon concert – perfect for soaking up the last bit of staycation.

Even the most successful female career woman needs a little bit of direction. Enter EWomenNetwork’s Accelerated Networking Dinner featuring the founder of GPS4Women, Suzie Conine. Known for their GPS Vision Day Workshop, the evening will be a dinner of discovery where you will be armed with ways to keep your business and personal life on track and get ahead with clarity, focus and positivity.

FRIDAY

The Vancouver Italian Film Festival opening gala is tonight. Starting at 6pm sharp, the night will feature live music, loads of vino, a photo exhibit featuring Italian screen siren Sophia Loren, and bites from both Bella Gelataria and Il Centro. Films will run until Thursday.

Looking for a place for dinner?

We already told you about Tacofino’s exciting Vancouver their first outpost, Taco Bar, earlier this week – but now the time has come for them to officially open their doors. Dinner starts at 5pm and will be the place to eat all weekend long.

SATURDAY

Head over to Nat Bailey Stadium, and you’ll find the winter edition of the Vancouver Farmers Market. Pick through nothing but fresh and local produce between 10am–2pm and we promise you’ll be feeling good when you’re cooking up a storm.

If nature is your thing but hiking a mountain at this time of year can’t be done, watching the largest gathering of bald eagles is something that can. It’s happening right now in the beautiful backyard of B.C. Not far from Squamish, venture to the trails in Brackendale where you can catch scenic views at the Eagle Viewing Dyke alongside these majestic creatures settling in for their seasonal nestling.

Sunwolf Resort’s Eagle Float comes highly recommended with lunch, bakery treats, a river guide, and a fireplace to warm up around post-trip or spend the night in a riverside cabin.

Is 2015 the big year where you will tie the knot? The 38th Annual Wedding Fair is happening at the Westin Bayshore Hotel this weekend. The absolute top vendors attend this wedding show waiting to meet the bride and groom to be. Start your planning early, avoid any stage of bridezilla and relax throughout one of the most memorable times of your life. One lucky couple will even have the chance to win their dream wedding – a value (um, savings) of $100,000.

SUNDAY

New year. New you. Blah. Blah. Blah.

It’s getting close to the two-week mark of the new year and you haven’t really worked on your resolution.

Don’t worry. You’re most likely not alone.

Get going with Semperviva Yoga’s Detox Now workshop. This is for the ones who are regretful, guilty, and well, not exactly motivated when it comes to the health and fitness part of life.

Gloria Latham will guide you past all of those feelings and get you on the fast track to reaching all your goals.

Head to Hennessey Salon at Park Royal or Richmond Centre where the stylists will be donating their time for Wigs for Kids BC as a part of their 4th annual Hairdo fundraiser today only.

100% of all proceeds will go to the organization whose mission is to provide a child fighting cancer or facing other life-threatening illnesses with a free custom-fitted wig. Donations of $20 for men and $40 for women are recommended and will go a long way. So, if you’re in need of a trim or cut, get your ‘do done for a good cause.

Thinking of chopping it all off? Hair donations will also be accepted. Your luscious locks can easily change the life of a child in need.

Get off your couch and have some fun watching the Golden Globes Awards. The Rio is throwing a screening party with contests throughout the night.

Take a couple friends, mingle, and laugh all night. With Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the Awards broadcast this year – you don’t need to worry about coming up with any funny jokes. Popcorn, grilled cheese, and drinks will be served.

Oh, and it’s free. So now you don’t have any more excuses.
