#JeSuisCharlie: The Most Important Thing You Can Share on Social Media Today

Yesterday’s barbaric attack in Paris and its subsequent analysis and response will dominate headlines for the next several weeks. That much is clear.

But what’s equally as important as broadcasting the hard facts of the event is how we, as a society, choose to respond.

We’ve already seen the citizens of Paris flood the streets in a show of resilience against an attack that was meant to have the opposite effect. Crowds in Berlin offered their support by gathering outside the city’s French Embassy. And while many news outlets are giving into the terror tactics by censoring their coverage, others are firing back:

This is where we come in. And where social media – as it has in the past – shines.

The siege on Charlie Hebdo’s Paris office was more than an attack against a country or group of individuals. It sought to terrorize two core values of free society – freedom of the press and speech – with the aim of oppressing our right to cover issues critically, openly, and satirically.

Which is all the more reason to do just exactly that.

Let the terrorists’ efforts to subdue our voices be in vain.

Subsequently, do not allow what the free world has fought for over centuries to have been fought in vain.

We can each play a part in showing our solidarity, condolence, and defiance both today and in the weeks to come – and it starts with #JeSuisCharlie.
