Vancouver Weekender: January 10 through 12, 2014

Friday, if your not heading to the Canucks game (they take on the Blues starting at 7pm), grab a bite at Bammbuda for a modern take on Chinese cuisine before heading out to the opening event for Typo at Hot Art Wet City’s gallery. It goes off starting at 7pm and features typography as art from the likes of Scott Sueme, Frazer Adams and Bennett Slater. Cash bar and DJs will be on hand to get and keep the party going.

In keeping with the gallery theme, be sure to check out the kick-off of Locate, a collection of works curated by Avalon Mott setting up shop at Gallery 295. This Friday also marks the opening reception, not to mention quality opportunity to mix and mingle with other, culturally-minded YPs.

Also happening on Friday is the Tarantino Burlesque show at the Vancouver FanClub (show starts around 9pm) featuring music from all the classic Tarantino flicks,  original routines with a distinct Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction twist and plenty of rowdy fun guaranteed. Catch Voodoo Pixie, Ariel Hevetica, Sparkle Plenty and more as they take the stage – Tarantino-style.

Saturday morning, brave the dreary weather and scoot out and around the Seawall wrapped up in the knowledge that you’re not dealing with a wind chill factor. Make your way over to the Winter Farmer’s Market to stock up on quality local goods if you happen to be (one of the many) on the 2014 ‘cleanse’ bandwagon. It’s the perfect way to eat your way healthy – especially given the load of fresh produce currently available (think: kale, cabbage, squash, pears and more). Aside from the fresh veggies, there’s still plenty of baked goods and other specialty handmade items.

Saturday night, hit up one of our casual Coal Harbour favourites, Mahony & Sons Burrard Landing, or neighbouring Tap & Barrel, for a pint or two. Next, head down to the Orpheum Theatre and throw a little more culture into your weekend mix by grabbing tickets to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s special one-night performance dubbed 007 ‘Fifty Years of James Bond’. It’s guaranteed to be a tribute you won’t forget featuring all the famous songs and scores that brought Bond flicks to life on the big screen.

Sunday, we think you ought to cruise over to the North Shore for a bit of West Coast-style R&R by grabbing a sweet or savoury treat at Temper Pastry in Dundarave Village. They’ve just opened (softly) and have already garnered quite the local buzz with an award-winning chef/owner who knows their way around a kitchen. Worth noting: they’re fully stocked on Stumptown Coffee, so grabbing a java to go is even more appealing (especially when accompanied by a freshly-baked croissant or mini chocolate torte).

For those of you who are a bit of a graphic novel geek (it’s okay… we get it), we have just the thing to satisfy the comic cravings.  Vancouver Comic Con is back and takes place Sunday at the Heritage Hall all day featuring hourly door prizes, special appearances by celebrity artists and free admission (with donation of gently used school-appropriate comics.
