Montreal Weekender: January 9 through 12, 2014

Thursday
The 7th annual Happening Gourmand kicks off today and will keep bellies stuffed and happy all frosty season. From January 9 to February 2, eight restaurants scattered throughout Old Montreal prepare special lunch and dinner menus at great rates. Dig into the city’s most palatable plates for a fraction of the price. This year’s participating restaurants include newcomer Kyo Bar Japonais, BEVO Bar + Pizzeria, Modavie, Méchant Boeuf, Suite 701, Taverne Gaspar, Verses Restaurant and Vieux-Port Steakhouse. A great way to explore the Old Montreal culinary scene at superb rates.

Pack your bags and head out tonight for the last two days of the Electrofest Tremblant, presented by Bud Light Platinum and produced by evenko and Vobe with the Tremblant Resort Association and MusiquePlus. Taking place at the foot of the slopes of Tremblant, many beloved artists will take part in the winter fun, including Tiga, 12th Planet, A Tribe Called Love, Keys n Krates, Clockwork, Lunice and many more.?During the day, ski and snowboard amateur competitions judged by the public will take place on Tremblant’s slopes – a great way to warm up into the night’s activities.

Friday
The indie kid’s party central and one of our personal faves on St Laurent, Le Belmont, apparently loves their patrons so much that they are hosting a free entry party tonight with some stud DJs like Crimewave, Ryan Orphan, Dubspecter and more. Shots are $3.50 and so are beers… you know what that means? Leave your car at home!

Missed Axl Rose a few months ago in Montreal? Worry not, the next best thing is taking the stage tonight in the form of Appetite for Democracy, who are going to comb the history of the now legendary group Guns N Roses. The group’s sound, energy and presence replicates what made Guns N Roses a band of the ages. You will hear all the hits that will bring you back to your bandana-wearing and jean short days; basically, get ready to rock… big time.

Saturday
Continuing into the awesome foodie events happening in the city this month, for the second year in a row LE CHOP is presenting Montrealers with a selection of gourmet dining for less. This time, for two months, the popular and delicious: DECCA77Le NewtownGuido & AngelinaL’Atelier D’Argentine and Wienstein & Gavinos, are all offering a fabulous selection of table d’hôte menus at special prices. Now you have an excuse to leave your house (even if it’s cold) to discover a variety of cuisine from top chefs on a low budget until February 28th, 2014.

Need an activity to warm you up tonight? Why not try a fun jive dancing class? Join the JiveStudio dance school and its dancers for another dancing night at Sala Rossa as part of their Jive Around the Clock nights. For the occasion, they invited Melvis and the Jive Cats to spin the perfect tunes for all the dancers and to keep the night going.

Sunday
Dubbed as the young Bob Dylan, English singer/songwriter Jake Bugg will be showcasing his melodious, working-class swagger of rock n roll blues at the Metropolis tonight. In a whirlwind year, Bugg went on to tour extensively across the U.K. while receiving nominations for awards, including a Brit Award for Best British Newcomer and also the coveted Mercury Music Prize. This is a concert not to miss.

The weekend forecast for the slopes is not looking too shabby, so if you haven’t strapped on those skis or boards yet, make sure you head out for a short drive to one of the locals like Saint Sauver, Bromont or a little further for the better pow-pow at Mont Sutton, which is one of our personal fave. Bundle up, YPs, the wind chill on the chairlift can hit you pretty hard… but the ride down is worth it.
