Toronto Finally Gets a Starring Role in ‘The F Word’

Unlike countless films past, there is no disguising the T-dot in Entertainment One’s (eOne) The F Word.

From the TTC buses, Beck taxis, unmistakable landmarks and some of the city’s favourite restaurants, Toronto starred in the romantic comedy as much as lead actors Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan did.

You’ll recognize things like the CN Tower, Riverdale Park, Yonge-Dundas Square, Ashbridges Bay, the Boardwalk and the Royal Cinema in all their glory as the characters enjoy the city as much as we do – from a heart-wrenching wedding and bonfire at Cherry Beach to skinny-dipping at the Scarborough Bluffs and girly gossip at Leslieville’s Purple Purl knitting store.

You may even catch a glimpse of your neighbourhood or condo building. Filming locations include neighbourhoods like Little Italy, Leslieville, Cabbagetown and East Chinatown. Also making appearances are your go-to brunch spot George Street Diner (the spot of romantic gatherings between the main characters) and date night staple SPiN Toronto (among others like, Rooster Coffee House).

Directed by Michael Dowse (Goon), the film documents the relationship of Wallace (Radcliffe) and Chantry (Kazan), who have an undeniable chemistry after meeting. There’s just one problem: she has a boyfriend. They agree to be friends… but we all know that never works out as planned. Nor does it in the film, when hearts and tempers get involved.

Aside from the Toronto landmarks and references (see how many you can count), you’ll also like the film because you can relate to it. Have you ever fallen for someone (even a crush) who was in a relationship? Be honest. Or secretly wanted to grab your best guy or girl friend and make out like you were on a sinking ship? Yeah, us too.

The F Word deals with issues around break-ups, challenges with long distance relationships and, of course, falling in love. It’s actually the type of film that makes you want to fall in love and LOL at the same time. So, if you’re looking for a perfect date night movie, this is it.

Not to mention, the film features a soundtrack composed entirely by Canadian music veteran AC Newman.

Inevitably, it will make Toronto seem a little more romantic in its own right. The F Word will open in theatres across Canada on August 22.
