The Only White Party You Need to Know About

Whoever said it’s faux pas to wear white after Labour Day clearly hasn’t been to Diner en Blanc. On September 4th, Calgary’s second installment of the all-white pop-up dinner party will be taking place in an undisclosed location in the city – even the guests attending won’t know where to set down their picnic baskets until minutes before the event happens.

Since its inception in Paris in 1988, the Diner en Blanc series has been a fun and impromptu way to celebrate friends and good food in a totally chic way. Born as a word of mouth event, this evening has caught attention the world over, now taking place in 40+ cities all over the globe. Despite its rapid growth, Diner en Blanc still remains an exclusive affair by invitation only. In order to attend, guests must be invited by someone who’s attended a previous year or sign up on the official wait list.

If you were lucky enough to receive an invitation for the 2014 party, then you have just a few weeks to get prepared. All-white is mandatory for these parties and the fancier your attire, the better. Beyond your outfit you also have to remember to bring a table for two, chairs, all-white linen and a picnic basket with proper chinaware and dinner if you’re foregoing the catered option.

While it might be fun to put together your own picnic basket of bits and bites, its advisable to order off this year’s menu, a collaboration between Top Chef Nicole Gomes and Notable Restaurant’s Michael Noble – two of the city’s best when it comes to anything culinary.

If you’ve never attended a Diner en Blanc party and haven’t received an invitation, don’t wait any longer to add your name to the wait list. For those of you who have already received your invite, visit the YYC site for all the details on dress code, etiquette and supplies.
