Montreal Weekender: January 23 through 26, 2014

THURSDAY
A group discussion on how to create, communicate, and make people connect over ideas, and concepts? You hit the jackpot, because ThoughtBasin’s tradition of doing great events to inspire thinking and innovation on campus continues with a panel of Montreal leaders in communication and connection at Concordia. Think of it like a living workshop on how to constantly create and communicate new ideas, and retain the interest and engagement of a multitude of people. Speakers will be announced today, and due to limited capacity, tickets are going quick.

Thursday is the new, well, weekend… and in celebration, we encourage you to check out the Velvet official re-opening weekend. What can you expect? An inked partnership with a luxury brand that defines the perfect melange of chic, art and partying, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and a redesigned nightclub with a new life keeping the distinct elements that make Velvet Speakeasy the special place it is. For this official opening weekend, Velvet will launch the festivities by inviting all the collaborators they will be working with in 2014 to each night. Tonight, catch Jay Lindon, No Kliche, SaintWoods (Love on The Boat) and much more. Get ready to dance the night away.

FRIDAY
A perfect day to discover two perfect new spots on Notre Dame. We went and tested them both and can comfortabley vouch that you will not leave both spots for at least a good four hours. One reason? They are pretty much attached to eachother. The other? How about some of the most delicious and mouthwatering Asian food Montreal has to offer, along with an intimate atmosphere perfect for you and 2, 3 or 4 of your friends or even a date. We are of course talking about Shinji, the newest Griffintown addition.

After eating their fine sushi selections or the countless other items on the menu that are seriously just too damn fresh (and we loved it), head over next door through their basement to Rufus Rockhead, an open but very intimate space filled with a menu of vintage cocktails like the Rusty Nail… and the wine list itself isn’t too shabby either. The concept here is to create a soundtrack to suit Montreal’s image. Basically, expect awesome tunes and some super DJs. Oh yeah, they have some easy food to nibble on too if a little hunger sets in.

Jigga what? Jigga who? That’s right, the man, the legend, one of our time’s best rappers is in town and will be tearing down the roof of the Bell Centre tonight! The hype around the city for this show is unreal, and judging from his past live shows, it’s no wonder everyone’s throwing their hands up for Jay-Z. Tickets are either sold out or very scarce, so get on it now if you wish to catch any left over seats.

SATURDAY
Still haven’t checked out Montreral’s ”iciest” outdoor extravaganza? Tonight’s the time to throw on that one piece, double up the socks and head over the Igloofest. Why tonight? How about the fact that you can take your Igloofest to a whole other level for $60 by attending their VIP Party? What does this mean? No lineups, exclusive access to the heated Igloofest suite and mezzanine, Igloofest toques, open bar, all the Hype Energy you can drink, and more. Party on, kids!

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts presents Peter Doig in No Foreign Lands. This will be the first exhibition of Doig’s work to be shown after the exhibition that circulated to Tate Modern in London, the Musée d’art moderne of Paris and the Frankfurt Schirn Kunsthalle in 2008. The exhibition will look at the way that the artist works in thematic and formal groupings, culminating in often large canvases and works on paper. A truly beautiful vision.

SUNDAY
Check out the Maison Symphonique at Place Des Arts tonight for some stellar music. At just 30 years of age, the dynamic young conductor Christian Vásquez is a product of the Venezuelan music education program El Sistema, which also gave the world Gustavo Dudamel. The Orchestre Métropolitain will be introducing him to the Montreal public as he makes his Québec debut. The program also features pianist Maxim Bernard, winner of the prestigious 2006 Stepping Stone of the Canadian Music Competition.

We recently wrote about Restaurant Sel Gras, a gem that rose from the ashes after a vicious arson attak and has re-opened and re-build itself with love, new inspiration and the same great food as before. It’s a Mediteranean-inspired foodie heaven always full of people you wouldn’t mind be-friending. The reastaurant makes people feel at ease and welcomed as much in the decor as in the food, and of course the service. Pop by and give them a shout!
