Calgary Weekender: January 24 through 26, 2014

From a must-attend dinner in Banff kicking off Friday evening to a variety of notable arts performances and cocktail parties spanning the weekend, we've covered everything young professionals in Calgary should have on their social calendar

Friday

Banff’s Big Taste
The Maple Leaf Grill in Banff is hosting an amazing dinner this Friday night. Chefs from seven of Banff’s top restaurants will be converging in one space to prepare their signature dishes. It’s like eating in seven restaurants in one night.  Come and enjoy the delicious samplings that will be prepared by The Bison Restaurant & Terrace, Giorgio’s Trattoria, The Bear Street Tavern, Maple Leaf Grill & Lounge, Magpie & Stump, Eddie Burger Bar and the Balkan. The Big Taste event starts at 6.30 pm. You can reserve tickets today by calling 1-866-760-7680. Tickets are $20. There will be an after party at Aurora Night Club following dinner.

Madeline Peyroux
If you are in the mood for some beautiful jazz this Friday then you’ll want to catch Madeline Peyroux at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Peyroux got her start busking on the streets of Paris when she was just a young woman. It wasn’t long before she became a mainstay on the jazz scene with her unique voice and smooth delivery of classic jazz standards. It’s no wonder that she’s been compared to Billy Holiday.

While in Calgary, you’ll be treated to a selection of material from her latest album The Blue Room. Joanna Borromeo will be opening at 7 pm. What a great way to start the weekend.

Friday/ Saturday/Sunday

The Forum
The Rosza Centre will be hosting FORUM 2014, which runs until Sunday January 26th. Meet some of the brightest and most talented music professionals from across the country and the world. This event is geared towards connecting people in the in the music business with fellow musicians, music communities and new audiences. There are really no other opportunities quite like this one. There will be guest speakers from the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Sinfonietta, the Miller Theatre in New York and Soundstreams Canada in Toronto. Everyone is welcome.

Craigslist, anyone?
Presented by One Yellow Rabbit & Alberta Theatre Projects, this is one heck of an interesting play. Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata is inspired by the junk as well as the gems that we sell online. This comedy explores the meaning of what our possessions for sale really say about humanity in an age that is dominated by Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and Vine. Tickets are $30 and the play’s running time is 90 minutes with no intermission. #hilarious.

Cocktails at Pam’s
Mixing snobby socialites, neurotic singles, flirty family members and a high-strung hostess in a dinner party setting is just asking for trouble. You can guarantee this evening will be full of drama when you add alcohol and an angsty divorcee into this weird combination of guests. While Pam may not be enjoying herself, the audience will delight in the chaos of her well intentioned get together gone terribly wrong. You may think twice before you ever consider throwing your own dinner party.

Saturday/Sunday

Chinese New Year
Come and celebrate 2014 Chinese New Year ( the year of the horse) at the Chinese Cultural Centre. There will be a colourful Dragon and Lion Dance to help kick-off the beginning of the Chinese calendar. There will also be martial art demonstrations, folk art, a silent auction, draws, trade booths and lots of delicious food. Come and see the 15-foot tree sculpture that is being erected to bring a year of good fortune and luck to all the people of Calgary.
