Montreal Weekender: December 12 through 15, 2013

THURSDAY
And we’re back with our fourth installment of “The Notable Merchants” 5 a 7 at Old Port’s The Royal Merchant with holiday excitement in the air. This time around, Grand Marnier is on the specials menu providing chilly winter-ready cocktails, in addition to tequila, a Hype Energy happy hour, delicious free pizza from 5 until 7, the Chano and Terlecki bar dream team to keep the fun times going, and your favorite hits. Don’t forget to get there early; it gets packed fast and table reservations are recommended.

Still looking for that special present for your girl or (girl)friend? Why not pop by the W Hotel for the Mira Sadi Jewels event, where you can dance the night away to live music by Florence Masson, resident DJ at W’s Wunderbar, while you glance at some amazing statement jewelry.

FRIDAY
The Phi Centre has become a staple for great movie and art showcases and tonight proves no different. The Story Of Descendents/All follows band leader Bill Stevenson as he pushes his rotating door of bandmates to “achieve ALL,” his philosophy of going for greatness at all costs. Stevenson is a force to be reckoned with, proving that not even a grapefruit-sized brain tumour can keep him down. Interviews with the band, along with Dave Grohl and many more, reveal the story of a band – if not THE band – responsible for pop-punk as you know it.

Here’s something NOT for the faint of heart. Urban Tales at the Centaur Theatre turns up the heat this winter with a special, estrogen-charged Ladies Night edition that will make your inner Grinch feel all toasty inside. Written by well-known local playwrights, the anti-Yuletide spectacular features seven sparkling Montreal actresses who set the stage ablaze with monologues that spoof the ideal of seasonal holiday cheer. This is full-throttle anti-holiday entertainment that is not to be missed.

SATURDAY
Who doesn’t love a Christmas fair – and boy is there a plethora of them lately. One of our favorites is Puces POP Holiday Fair, taking place from December 13th to the 15th at Église Saint-Denis 5075, rue Rivard. For the first time, Puces POP will set up in the basement of Église St-Denis to host the most vendors yet with over 100 curated artists grouped under one roof. There will be around 9000 visitors enjoying artisan crafts and gifts, perfect for that stocking stuffer or under the tree gift.

Montreal’s ATAME Restaurant, known for its delectable aphrodisiac foods and sensual vibe, is holding a special Winter Wonderland evening tonight. Details are being kept a tad secret, which has intrigued us… perhaps you can form your own opinion of what you can expect by their brief rhyme: “We will be waiting under the mistletoe, we just want you here tonight, with every sip we take, make our wish come true, all we want this holiday season is you…”

MONDAY
Sunday is quite un-eventful this weekend and seems to have been taken over by Monday, so take it easy today and save your energy for tomorrow. Starting tonight, Montreal’s “Bier Markt” on 1221 Boulevard Rene-Levesque Ouest is open to the public, so raise your mugs in glory and get ready to drink and eat. Every meal on the menu is built from scratch and designed to perfectly complement the Biers in their BIN. With more than 150 Biers from over 30 countries, their Bier curators will take you on a guided journey to ensure each dish reflects and harmonizes with the brewers’ work of art.

Made with Love is back! This annual event allows guests to see what Montreal has to offer in terms of the culture cocktail. 16 of the city’s best mixologists will come together tonight at the SAT to present each of their mixology creations, and you, notable reader, will be able to taste these concoctions and vote for your favourite; an interactive experience not to be missed.
