Melissa Nepton: Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur

Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur is fashion designer Melissa Nepton, whose collections can be found at over 140 stores worldwide. We caught up with her to talk about what inspired her career and where she sees herself in five years…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
I am the founder, manager and designer for my womenwear brand, Melissa Nepton.

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
After being a finalist in Quebec’s version of the show Project Runway, doors really opened up for me in the design and fashion field – it was a great opportunity and the accelerator for me to start my own line.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best part of my job is the creative side, and designing clothing for women. The most challenging part is managing a young baby (I have a three-month-old) while managing a business.

What is one sign that you’ve seen over the years to suggest that your work/life balance is off?
As I have a new-born baby, it’s a bit hard to answer this question right now!

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Still working with the Melissa Nepton brand and designing clothing, as well as continuing to grow the company to be a player at the international level.

What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
The uncertainty of the retail market is a big challenge. My goal is to try and understand my clientele and what they want and need, and creating designs that will suit these needs perfectly.

What does success look like to you? Does Money = Happiness?
Success is that the people who work with me are happy, and that women feel good and enjoy wearing my clothing.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
Reaching 140 stores carrying the Melissa Nepton brand!

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Be passionate. Passion will drive you to achieve your goals.

Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?
Le Filet in Montreal – they have the best tataki.

When you’re not working how do you love to spend your “Me” time?
When the kids are sleeping, I actually like having some time to myself to clean and organize my home in peace.

Where is your favourite place to travel? Why?
My favourite place to travel is New York, because I feel at home there – and it’s not too far from Montreal.

If you had to choose a theme song, what would it be?
New York, New York
by Frank Sinatra

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing, what would you be doing?
I can’t event imagine that. I know that am doing exactly what I should be doing. If I wasn’t a designer, I think I’d be doing 1,000 random things.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
I support a variety of youth charities, as I like to support the future.

What to you is notable?
Positivity .
