Jana Macova: Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur

Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur is Jana Macova, Designer and Manufacturer of playful, sexy and edgy bags and apparel at her Vancouver-based company/factory Mary Rich. What was the inspiration for her career route? Find out in today’s profile…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
I spend a lot of time at my factory, which is a block away from my studio.

I’m extremely hands-on in the development of all my products, from design and pattern making, sourcing, cutting, sample making and all stages of production. The production process is what excites me the most. Getting sh*t made.

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
My father is a manufacturer and creator of beautiful things. I got the entrepreneurial spirit from my parents. Plus, leather has always been my preferred material to work with. It was natural and inevitable.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best part of my day-to-day is the schedule that I’m able to make for myself, hands down. The challenging part is time management. Not enough hours in the day.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself expanding the line into footwear and outerwear, running my small factory and sample room in Vancouver, and producing goods in other parts of North America as well. NAFTA.

What does success look like to you?
Success to me is freedom, particularly travel. I believe that the ability to travel is the greatest luxury.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
I haven’t experienced it yet. I’m new.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Get straight to it like there ain’t nothin’ to it.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
Well, funny you ask! I also produce handmade leather poppies for Remembrance Day with part of the proceeds going to the Royal Canadian Legion. I started making them last year and got a wonderful response. I’m selling them commercially through retail partners for Remembrance Day 2013. Look out for them!

What to you is notable?
Not giving a f***.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
Blackberry and iPhone. I won’t get rid of that keypad.
