Instagram Just Added a Brand New Video Option

If this isn’t the addition your Instagram feed needs right now, it’s the one it deserves.

In a social media universe that is growing ever smaller and shorter (think: Twitter count, Vine limit), Instagram has just granted our generation – and its famously short attention span – the kind of video it craves the most: that of the one-second variety.

While they’re claiming it’s not a GIF, Instagram is rolling out Boomerang, a video option that allows users to record a moments of their lives with a burst of photos that transform into a video that will move forward and backward (now you get the name) forever.

We already told you Facebook will soon let you turn your profile pic into a GIF so it seems like the future of social media will be a lot of one second loops that probably just could have been photographs. As much as we love Instagram, this might be the first time we’re questioning whether or not they’ve run out of ideas.

Here’s their official explanation:

Press a button and the app does the rest. Boomerang takes a burst of photos and stitches them together into a high-quality mini video that plays forward and backward. Shoot in portrait or landscape. Share it on Instagram. Boomerang automatically saves it to your camera roll. We’re inspired by the visual stories you tell on Instagram. With looping videos and Hyperlapse, you experiment with motion in new and exciting ways. Now, with Boomerang, we can’t wait to see what you’ll create next.

Whether it becomes the next big thing or not remains to be seen, but we’re pretty sure it’ll be fun for at least the first few days. Heck, just look at these fun-loving millennials having a whacky and wild day with Boomerang. In an unrelated note, has anyone seen Natalie Portman’s character from Garden State around…
