Calgary Weekender: September 15th through 18th, 2011

Fall has finally hit Calgary, and with it many of the 2011/2012 schedules for live arts performances begin. For YPs, this is a great time to attend and support live theatre and dance in the city.

One of Theatre Calgary’s first performances of the 2011/2012 season is Tosca Cafe, based in San Francisco’s renowned establishment of the same moniker, where imagination flows like wine and memories waltz through the swinging doors. In this stunning blend of dance and theatre, almost a century of history, from Prohibition to the WiFi generation, is beautifully choreographed to a musical score ranging from Puccini to Hendrix. It’s a production that has been hailed by critics as “smart, sexy and wild” and simply “phenomenal.”

Vertigo Theatre, is currently presenting Dangerous Corner, which is a thriller about a group of close friends who gather at a stylish country retreat. Beautiful and successful, they have the world at their fingertips. During the party, a cigarette box and an ill-considered remark ignite a series of disclosures. “One by one, dangerous and deadly secrets are exposed until nothing remains but the painful truth.”

If you love dance why not head to Theatre Grand. Currently it is hosting The Golden Mean by Compagnie Marie Chouinard. The first performed was part of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver; it’s an erotic, avant-garde, humorous and deeply human work by one of the world’s foremost visionaries of contemporary dance. Only in Calgary for five days, this show is definitely worth attending.

Or consider checking out The Alberta Ballet as this weekend The National Ballet will be here in Calgary performing. Celebrating its 60th Anniversary, The National Ballet of Canada brings its proven excellence to Alberta once again with this exciting mixed repertoire: The Second Detail, Other Dances, Emergence, and The Man in Black.

With shows Thursday through Saturday, you don’t want to miss this opportunity to explore the rich culture and theatrics of the stage. Grab your friends and check out one, or several, of these notable shows this weekend!
