Vancouver Weekender: September 16th through 18th, 2011

With a weather forecast looking kind of (we hate to say it) dull, we’ve brightened things up with a weekend fix full of events and ideas guaranteed to keep you entertained.

Roll into the weekend with a post-work beverage and pop by JOEY Wine Room, located in Vancouver’s downtown core (Bentall One, 507 Burrard Street). Tucked next to their always-packed, more casual restaurant, the Wine Room offers an opportunity to taste your way around the world with more than 60 wines available by the glass.

Looking to escape the CBD gridlock? Mosey on over to one of our favourite YP-friendly haunts: the historic (and refurbished) Lamplighter Public House for a quick pint and try your hand at a game of pool. Stick around and you’ll be privy to the We Salute You Fridays celebrations. Find the Lamplighter at 92 Water Street.

Though summer temperatures may be waning, there’s no need to put away your putter just yet. We suggest you book in for some tee time at the stunning UBC Golf Club (pack an umbrella, just in case). This club is open to the public, so check online for availability or opt to play the adjacent range.

This Saturday, break out your lederhosen and dirndl’s and head over to the Vancouver Alpen Club to kick-off of Oktoberfest in true Bavarian-style. This popular event runs for the next three weekends featuring all the food, fun and beer you can manage…ensuing hangover at no charge. Located at 4875 Victoria Drive.

Looking to hone-up on your bargaining skills? Or perhaps you’re in search of some vintage decor? Head over and partake in the hunt at this weekend’s 21st Century Flea Market taking place at the Croatian Cultural Centre. With nearly 200 different vendors displaying fine finds waiting to be snapped up by savvy shoppers with an eye for detail, this Euro-style market is a must-see. The hunting begins bright and early on Sunday at 3250 Commercial Drive.

Feeling a bit lazy before heading into the work-week? We’ve discovered (yet) another fine pizza joint that’s made its way onto our Notable radar. Park yourself at one of Pizzeria Farina’s (pictured above) rustic wood tables at 915 Main Street for a taste of simple yet flavourful rich pizza bliss. And that’s all you’ll find on their menu…pizza, that is. Working with traditional Neopolitana toppings, as well as a jaunts into other regional culinary realms, this hot spot hits the spot (sales end when the dough disappears). Open evening from midweek to Sunday, we recommend you get your fix.
