Calgary Weekender: October 18 through 20, 2013

Friday and Saturday
Rocky Mountain Food and Wine Festival
Enjoy your weekend while sampling your way through Alberta’s largest food and wine festival. The Grand Tasting Hall will have a great selection of wines and liquors to sample in the Stampeded BMO Centre.  You’ll be able to try Malbec from Argentina, big jammy Shiraz from Australia, premium scotch, and an endless supply of microbrew beers. And let’s not forget about all the amazing restaurants that are participating in the event. Don’t miss the Buttercream Bake Shoppe – rumour has it they’ll be sharing samples of their decadent cupcakes, like the pumpkin caramel pecan cupcakes. The event runs October 18th and 19th.

Friday
The Oh Sees
Get ready for a night of fun at Republik nightclub on Friday night. The Oh Sees are in town and they are ready to party with Calgary. The Oh Sees are known for their prolific release of albums and for their energetic shows. John Dwyer and his band’s style bridges musical boundaries and touches on punk, garage and psychedelic rock. Blind Shake and OBN III’s will be opening. Doors are at 9pm, which means you’ll have time to grab a quick bite at the Ship and Anchor before the show starts. You can’t go wrong with the Ship Burger. Advance tickets are available at Sloth Records

Into the Mind
It’s time to get excited for ski season with a new film, Into the Mind, which is presented by Sherpas Cinema for one night only in Calgary. Into the Mind tells the story of rising to the ultimate challenge. The film follows epic summits of majestic mountaintops in Alaska, Bolivia and the Himalayas. Combined with mind-blowing cinematography and a compelling storyline, we’re asked to question how we balance risk and reward when we push ourselves to the limit. Anyone who loves to spend time in the mountains will want to make sure they check this film at the Globe Theatre. If you feel like making a night of it, check out Cucina for dinner. It’s only a hop, skip and a jump away!

Saturday
