Calgary Weekender: March 21 through 23, 2014

Friday

Steve Dawson and Kenna Burima
Counting the days until Folk Fest? Let this pair hold you over. One of Calgary’s most versatile performers, Burima is responsible for that End of the World Music Festival back in 2012, has played with a long list of local acts, and will be playing this summer’s Sled Island. Following her sure-to-be-impressive set is Juno-nominated instrumental artist Steve Dawson, who sure knows his way around a glass bottleneck and a steel guitar. Whatever your style, their talent is worth checking out. Doors are at 7pm.

Friday/Saturday

Closer
This one might not star Jude Law or Natalie Portman, but don’t worry; the stage performance of the drama Closer will still have you singing Damien Rice ballads to your multiple lovers all weekend long. The play, which opens this Friday at the Vertigo Theatre, is “pay-what-you-want” on Friday and Saturday, with regular tickets going for $30 for the rest of the run. Who doesn’t feel like a cheap, twisted love affair once in a while?

Grape Escape
If the hedonist in you feels like playing tonight, then you might want to make your way to the Grape Escape happening on Friday and Saturday night from 5 to 9pm at the Stampede grounds. The Co-op’s annual festival gets everyone into the spirit with a great selection of wine, liquor and beer. This year you’ll have 75 fabulous producers who will be sharing samples. With all these wonderful options under one roof, this really is a no-brainer.

Saturday

High Tea in Style
For the slightly more refined, how about an afternoon of delectable dainties and lovely little sandwiches in a timeless setting? The Cork and Canvas Festival continues this weekend with its annual event at the Fairmont Palliser benefiting the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring a fashion show from Ooh La La. This is a great opportunity to wear that fascinator you bought to celebrate the Royal Wedding and haven’t put on since. High Tea starts at 2pm.

Slow Food Calgary Kitchen Party
Slow Food’s mandate is to work with local diners, chefs and producers to connect the dots, making everyone aware of the amazing food community and suppliers in our own backyard. Whether you’re an early adopter or new to the slow food table, you’ll enjoy this locally sourced sit-down meal and kitchen party. If you’re looking to learn more about the movement, take them up on their free and open invitation to the AGM before dinner (5 to 6pm). If you like what you see and taste, take advantage of special deals for new members under 30.

Saturday and Sunday

Tapas for Brunch
Head to 17th Ave on Sunday for one of the most delicious meals you’ll find in Calgary. Go for the full tapas brunch table menu ($21 per person for a minimum of two guests, and worth every penny) and you’ll enjoy a sampling of their signature Patatas Bravas, those incredible Serrano-wrapped dates and the heavenly huevos Benedictine, just to get you started. For some further refreshment, their unique cocktail pitchers will be just what el doctor ordered. Every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2:30pm
