Calgary Weekender: June 20 through 22, 2014

Friday

Blitzen Trapper & Neko Case
This week the city has come alive with notable music and arts events as part of Sled Island. If you won’t be partaking in the whole festival but want to make it out for one evening, we highly suggest you buy tickets for the Olympic Plaza show on Friday night. Blitzen Trapper will be rocking out shortly after 8pm with Neko Case of the New Pornographers (also known as the queen of heartbreak ballads) going on around 9:30pm. You can find the full line-up of screenings, concerts, art displays and comedy acts on the Sled Island website.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

Stampede Cocktails
If you’re looking to condition your liver for Stampede, Bar C has just introduced their signature Western cocktail. The Cowboy’s Breakfast is just the right amount of booze and breakfast meat. Made with bourbon, tequila, a splash of maple syrup and liquid smoke (not exactly sure what this is yet), this versatile drink is sure to get you going on a Friday night or a rough Sunday morning. P.S. If you do happen to figure out what liquid smoke, is can you please let us know?

Get Your Greek On
The Greek Society is throwing a Greek Festival this weekend and is sure to be a good time. The festival will include three fun-filled and lively days of traditional bands, wild dancing and athletic competitions. You’ll love the Mediterranean cuisine and your taste buds are in for something totally unique if you’ve never sampled Greek wine. Be adventurous and ask for a glass of Retsina. If you’re on your best behaviour, you might even get to break a plate.

Colourful Training
The Colour Me Rad fun run takes place on June 27th and you can still join. If long distances aren’t really your thing, this event is a perfect way to get out, enjoy a little exercise, and participate in an event that is meant to make you smile. During the 5-km track, runners will be sprayed with an array of coloured powder that will be blasted from bombs, mortars and cannons (don’t worry, this wont’ hurt). By the end of the race you’ll be covered in every different shade you can imagine. Register today and try out a few practice runs this weekend.

Saturday/Sunday

PARK in the Park
In partnership with Victoria Park BRZ, PARK, as in Promoting Artists and Redefining Kulture, is having a sale on June 21st and 22nd. This will be the third year running and anyone wanting to do a little shopping can stop by Haultain Park on Saturday and Sunday to browse the racks for funky local fashion. Admission is free and there will be over 75 vendors, live music and food trucks on site. Support your local fashion scene.

Sunday

Karaoke Party
Sundays are usually the best day to rest up and get ready for the week, but if you’re still geared up after training for your 5k run or can’t seem to sit still after partying hard for Sled Island, then you can make your way down to Broken City at 9pm for a little karaoke. Something tells us this will be a no-holds-barred kind of sing-off so if you’re looking for the perfect way to cap a crazy weekend, this might be the place you’ll feel most at home.
