Calgary Weekender: August 8 through 10, 2014

Friday and Saturday

Theatrical Roller Derby
If you’re thinking about checking out the Fringe Festival that’s keeping the Inglewood community abuzz then you should know about the one-woman show called Roller Derby Saved My Soul. This performance is sure to make laugh as you get to know a shy girl who finds her true passion in the highly competitive and often questionable sport of roller derby. You can catch RDSMS at the Alexandra Centre Society (located at 922 9th Avenue SE) on August 8th at 7 pm and August 9th at 3pm. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

Sweat it Out
If you’ve been neglecting your workout lately then you might want to look for creative ways to sweat it out over the weekend. You could always go for a run, sign up for spin class, or you could have a little fun by attending a surf-set class at Studio Revolution Fitness. One hour at this studio and you’ll feel your abs tighten, your agility quicken, and you won’t feel nearly as bad about going out for brunch after you get off your surf board.  All the weekend classes can be reserved on the website.

Saturday

Afrikadey!
On Saturday afternoon Prince’s Island Park is going to be bumping when the Afrikadey! Arts and Culture Society celebrates everything Africa. Last year Common wowed crowds but this year promises to be another great party with Arrested Development making an appearance later on in the evening. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 on site. Bring a little extra cash with you to try some of the tasty food that will be served from noon onwards.

Sunday

Collector’s Club
If you love pop-up shops and curious gift items then you probably know about the Collector’s Club that’s happening at the Commonwealth Bar this weekend. From 1 to 6pm you can shop at this super sweet market and admission is only $3 with all proceeds going to charity. Hunt for handmade jewelry, find those great vintage accessories or dig out those classic and hard-to-find records for your collection. Beyond finding cool objects you’ll get to listen to a few DJs spinning Sunday afternoon tracks while you sip on mimosas.

Veuve Clicquot Party
The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic takes place at the Calgary Polo Club this weekend. Sunday will be a luxurious day spent drinking bubbly and catching a few exciting matches. If you want to take advantage of VIP, you’ll have access to the signature VC lounge where you can enjoy a light lunch and a few fun summer games.

The dress code for this event is calling for chic and glamorous, so dress accordingly. The Calgary Polo Club is located at 306002 24th Street W.

Marda Gras
Sunday is shaping up to be the most popular day this weekend. From 10am to 5pm the Marda Loop community is throwing their Marda Gras Street party, an annual affair that’s influenced by the music and fanfare of the Big Easy. Marda Gras is now in its 30th year and the crowds are expected to be bigger than ever. Get out for a stroll and enjoy the street performances and a large variety of food vendors. Phil and Sebastian’s is a logical place to start after you grab your first java of the day.
