Oh my stars and garters! It’s Cabaret Week in Calgary. The last day of January will heat up with wild burlesque, long-forgotten stories of Calgary’s gay history and a fabulous appearance by Denise Clark and company in ‘All The Way Cabaret’.
On January 29th, the Garter Girls Cabaret show will be taking place at the Big Secret theatre in the EPCOR centre. The Garter Girls Collective is known as the best burlesque in all of Alberta. More than just pretty faces, these ladies will wow you with their ability to twirl their tassels and win the crowd over with their seductive smiles. You will love their bawdy sense of humour and spectacular costumes that they incorporate into every show.
You’ll meet Miyuki Divine, one of the longest-standing collective members, who has been around since the beginning. Miyuki is no shy gal; she’s performed in the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival, Las Vegas and countless Calgary shows. Also performing is the glamorous Raven Virgina, who has been part of the collective since 2009. Raven is a diverse performer who has danced in Lucha VaVoom, a well-known and much-loved Mexican wrestling and burlesque affair out of Los Angeles. Raven also runs the Garter Girls School of Burlesque sessions.
To start off the show, you’ll hear from the Mistress of Ceremonies, Roxie Floggings, a dancer who is known for her skyscraper heels and love of glitter. Be warned, this sharp-tongued seductress is not for the faint of heart.
Peekaboo Pointe will also be joining the Garter Girls. Peekaboo is known as one of most talented burlesque performers in North America. A classically trained dancer, Peekaboo is an accomplished performer who can tap dance, demi-pointe and tassel twirl with the best of them. It was a chance tour in Cuba that turned her love of dance from modern ballet and tap to Afro-Cuban dance, which she now mixes into her trademark burlesque shows.
If you can’t make the burlesque performance on the 29th, definitely make sure to look into Club Carousel, an event that will take you back to the first gay club in Calgary (happening on January 30th). And of course, the All The Way Cabaret with Denise Clarke is guaranteed not to disappoint (January 31st to February 1st).
