2014 Was the Year of Same Sex Commercials. Finally

Judging from the past year, commercials featuring same-sex couples are finally becoming mainstream.

And it’s about time.

These aren’t just any commercials either, but ones traditionally associated with picture-perfect nuclear families. (As the last commercial suggests, do these actually exist anymore?)

Even a decade ago it would have been unthinkable to feature same-sex couples in ads for brands like Cheerios and Tide. Yet, here they are. And they’re great.

Here are some of our favourites from the past 12 months…

Tide Canada
This cute Canadian commercial for Tide features a gay couple squabbling over laundry politics and taking harmless cheap shots at one another. But we probably don’t have to tell you that because it’s been on heavy rotation on Canadian TV all season long.

Honey Maid
In their attempt to redefine notions of “wholesome” after 90 years in the business, this Honey Maid graham cracker commercial features both a bi-racial family and a gay couple with children.

DirecTV
This football-themed DirecTV commercial shows a football-loving gay couple horsing around like bros (which you assume they are at first) as they discuss their rivalry when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants.

Hotwire
This commercial for Hotwire, released this past summer, shows a gay couple discussing their plans to find a hotel for a night free of their child and what may or may not happen while in bed.

Target
Target was all about the same-sex relationships this year. After featuring two gay dads in an ad in September, the company posted this ad later in the fall depicting a pregnant lesbian couple discussing their baby’s bedroom.

Cheerios
Like their American counterparts, General Mills Canada decided to get with the program with this commercial that features a gay couple, their African Canadian daughter, and a bowl of Cheerios. The real-life couple discusses their journey together and the story behind the adoption of their adorable daughter.

Starbucks
This past fall, Starbucks unveiled its first pro-LGTB commercial that stars “RuPaul’s Drag Race Girls” Adore Delano and Bianca Del Rio (from season six) front and centre. Not surprisingly, it’s pretty hilarious.

Tylenol
This new ad campaign by Tylenol features profiles on modern day American families, including one comprised of two lesbian mothers.
