Describe your job in a nutshell.
As an actor I get to be somebody new every day. Currently I’m working on a new sitcom called Package Deal with hilarious actors including Harland Williams, Jay Malone, Julia Voth, Eugene Levy and Pamela Anderson. It premieres on CityTV this Spring.
Why did you start working at your company (or working as an actor)?
I became an actor because it looked a lot easier than becoming a doctor.
What was the inspiration for this career route?
I was 21, living in Victoria, BC, and working as an insurance agent. I wanted to get off the rock and experience something, but I needed a reason to leave. I decided I was going to become an actor. I thought, how hard can it really be? But during my first acting class in New York I found out that I sucked, and if I really wanted this it was going to take a lot of hard work. Over the four years I lived and studied there, I developed a real love and passion for acting.
What is the best part of what you do on a day to day basis? The most challenging part?
The best part of my day is all of the laughing I get to do. At the end of each week we shoot Package Deal in front of a live studio audience, and it’s like a drug. Ironically the most challenging part of my job right now is also the comedy – it’s a lot harder than you’d think to make people laugh! I’ve developed a much greater respect for comedic actors while working on this show.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I hope to be filming season five of Package Deal, but if not, I’d love to be working on a similar project where I’m being challenged every day the way I am now. If that fails, I guess maybe living in Maui?
What does success look like to you?
Doing what you love and doing it by your own rules.
What is your most memorable milestone in your career?
The day I got the phone call saying I booked my first lead role. It was on a series called The Best Years for The N Network and it was the moment when I knew I belonged – that I wasn’t just chasing a dream, that I could actually compete.
Do you have any advice for other young professionals (actors)?
The world is full of nos. If you love something, go after it. Study. Get better everyday. Eventually someone will say yes. If you have talent they can’t ignore you forever. Buying lottery tickets is a great backup plan, too.
Do you support any charities? Which one?
When I lived in Kenya I volunteered with missionaries who ran support programs for kids living on the streets. Closer to home I love participating in motionball’s annual fundraising events to support Special Olympics Canada.
