Video: This is What Toronto Police Have to Put Up With – Could You?

Imagine that in your daily job there was always the potential for real life and death situations.

Imagine that every time you put on your uniform you also had to strap on a gun  and manage all the responsibilities and situations that arise with that.

Imagine that, if you’re good at your job and honest, you spend 12-hour shifts doing your absolute best (sometimes with split-second decision-making as your only guide) to ensure the safety of those who live, love, and work all around you.

And then imagine having the patience to deal with a couple of kids who seemingly took a high school law class and read the back cover of 1984 getting up in your face. Hell, imagine ever having the patience to deal with that.

Well, this video, originally uploaded to LiveLeak (presumably to show how controlling the cops were being), demonstrates what cops often have to deal with while simply doing their job. So much so, in fact, that the 53 Division Toronto Police Service uploaded the video to their Facebook page and asked viewers to comment.

‘Cause here’s the thing: for all the grief police get, for all the one bad cop = every cop, there are thousands of men and women out there on our streets every day and night doing everything they can to make your life a lot safer, easier, and free. They are charged with protecting the laws that make Canada one of the most livable countries in the world.

There are definitely cases of police officers abusing their power. Which is a very scary occurrence when it happens  and one that should always be taken with incredible seriousness. But this video isn’t one of those cases. If an officer asks you not to walk down a street, give them the benefit of the doubt that there’s a good reason they’re asking you not to.

Don’t be an asshole and start filming while you say asinine things like, “read 1984.” Don’t start pretending your rights are being violated or you live in some totalitarian state because one time in your life the police made you walk an extra block. Too many people in the world already live in cities and countries where any encounter with the police is one filled with legitimate fear and potential endangerment.

Let’s be grateful that Canada isn’t one of them.
