East Van Soul Club is where you ought to head this Friday starting at 9:30pm until late. Hosted at the Biltmore Cabaret, it’ll be a night loaded with great tunes, plenty of opportunity to mingle with like-minded soul enthusiasts sipping drink specials in a laidback atmosphere.

CANstruction Vancouver is on this weekend until May 16 and takes place at various locales around town. What exactly is CANstruction. you ask? Well, click the link above to learn more and prepare to be awed by the creative architectural and engineering feats of the canned food genius that this event invokes. Check out massive sculptures built entirely out of full tins of food by 20 different teams. Yes, we’re serious; this annual competition actually takes place in over 160 cities around the world.

DOXA Film Festival (running since last weekend) is still going strong, but it’s your last chance to catch one of a selection of films from around the world. On our must-watch list: Las Vegas Mediation, Point and Shoot, Song from the Forest, Pipeline and Love Sex Senior. Tickets are available individually or you can purchase a 5-pack for $55 here.

Saturday

The Spot Prawn Festival is back to kick off spot prawn season in Vancouver and is a must-do if you’re lucky enough to score a $40 ticket. It takes place at the False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf and features the always-popular Spot Prawn Boil, live entertainment, coffee, beer and wine tastings, as well as the chance to mix and mingle with friends. If you miss out, you can always savour the sprit of spot prawns at Oru Restaurant (at the Fairmont Pacific Rim) the following morning as part of their Mother’s Day Brunch.

Got Craft? Spring Edition is taking place all day Saturday and is the perfect spot to head to if you’re looking for a special gift for Mother’s Day. With more than 75 local vendors showcasing their creations, unique gifts will be in abundance. Shop your way around as you nosh on free samples, enjoy live music and take in a workshop or two. Go early and you’ll also score yourself a swag bag (not to mention tasty treats). 

The 19 Annual Stone Soup Festival takes place Saturday afternoon (until 5pm) at the Britannia Centre Site and Napier Greenway.  This all-day foodie fest celebrates the environment, art, music, food and community. Meet the local authors of “This East Van Kitchen” cookbook, take part in wellness workshops, enjoy free soup, get a tealeaf reading and shop the marketplace. 

Sunday

Blim Mother’s Day Market is the perfect place to head to with your mom. They are offering the first 20 moms a special swag bag, door prizes, gift certificates, a selection of treats and more. Enjoy perusing the works of more than 50 different crafters and artisans and pick up baked goods, vintage finds, home décor items and more. Your mom will love the laidback vibe and quality time.

Wind down your weekend and catch The Sunday Service Weekly Comedy Show at the Fox Cabaret. Doors open at 8pm sharp, the show begins at 9pm, and they’ve got plenty of local talent ready to entertain. Given its growth in popularity as Vancouver’s longest-running improve comedy show, it gets packed. Advanced table reservations are highly recommended. You can do so here.
