Toronto Weekender: March 29 through April 2, 2012

It’s the last weekend in March, and we don’t want any of our notables to be April Fools, so celebrate the first full month of Spring this break-end. Why stay home when you can go and be scene…?

Tonight marks the one year anniversary of Blowfish on Bay, and in true Toronto fashion they’re hosting a special party for patrons new and old. From 6pm to 9pm tonight, head over to enjoy bubbly, Chef Pan’s signature food, sake, and the music of Morgan Shim.

Tartare lovers unite: Grapes For Humanity‘s RAW! The Great Toronto Tartare-Off is bringing uncooked food stylings to the Royal York also this evening, pitting chefs against each other to be declared the King/Queen of Tartare. There will be a dozen different tartares to sample, with wines to pair, and all the proceeds go to Grapes for Humanity.

Actinolite Restaurant officially opened Wednesday night at 971 Ossington Avenue, and word is they have but five apps and five mains to choose from. (Remember how we talked about the trend of shrinking menus in the city?) The owners are Chef Justin Cournoyer, formerly of Susur, and wife Claudia Bianchi, a culinary producer and consultant for Food Network Canada. Pop by Friday night to be one of the first to try this new spot, rife with impressive pedigree.

To celebrate April as Canadian Liver Health Month, join a slew of other YPs at the Stirling Room Friday night for a party/fundraiser. It may seem a little ironic to host an event where there are sure to be, shall we say, heavy imbibers. But it’s all about balance, right?

Brunch time Saturday feels like a Canadiana one this week, so make your way over to the newly opened Camp Restaurant at 244 Jane Street for a bite in the homey atmosphere. Grab a quiche or the breakfast burrito and lounge back in the kitcheny space.

Saturday night sees one of the absolute best events year after year taking over the ROM. The Young Patrons’ Circle PROM is the 31st, and this year’s theme is Circus. This event always dazzles and awes, and expect this whimsical theme to do just the same. PROM at the ROM is hands-down one of those events you cannot miss…so don’t!

On Sunday, play several practical jokes, it is April 1st after all, then head over to Evergreen Brick Works for the Community Clothing Swap. Drop off your ‘gently-used’ clothing from 10am til noon, then from 1pm til 3pm ‘shop’ by way of exchange. It’s a fab way to give your closet a Spring cleaning.

Want a lovely dinner Sunday night? Stay in and cook, because you go out way too often.

Kidding. Sorry, that’s our one sad attempt at an early April Fools…our very, very sad attempt.

Now, for real, head out to crowd favourite Cava. Why? Because it’s BYOW and there’s no corkage fee. Nosh on warm olives, gamay-poached foie gras with pear mostarda, and some delightful kingfish ceviche while sipping on your self-sourced bottle of vino. Resplendent.
