Toronto Weekender: January 19 through 22, 2012

Cold and frigid like us? If you’re not we’re assuming you’re a Northern Canada transplant, and for that we applaud you to making it into civilization. However(!), if you’re a true TO city-zen, then you’ll be looking for some warmth this coming weekend. We’ve found it for you…

Tonight, grab some cheesy fondue and a pint of whatever ale you can think of at Bier Markt. Any of the three locations will do. The Fondue Feastivul is back at the favourite hangout, and features a variety of melted cheesy goodness like Gorgonzola or Camembert…and yes, chocolate fondue to finish the meal off.

Afterwards, head over to check out the opening night exhibition of artist John Kennedy’s Hopelessly Itinerant at Angell Gallery on lower Ossington. This is Kennedy’s third solo exhibition, and worthy stop for art loving YPs.

Dada Life is also playing at The Hoxton tonight. DL is a prominent Swedish electo-house duo that brings a signature style to their music and international sold out showcases.

On Friday, Lucid Cocktail Kitchen is set to open in the space left in the wake of Bohemian Gastropub. (Why it didn’t last we’ll never know.) Buzz is already abounding, setting Lucid up for somewhat high expectations. Here’s hoping the cocktails and grub deliver. You can check them out at 571 Queen Street West.

Head for dinner Friday at WVRST, because nothing says warm up like duck fat fries and plump and juicy brats. Grab a Dieu du Ciel while you nosh on some comfort grub in the warm beer hall.

Quest Love is playing a two-hour set at Brant House on Friday. The renowned DJ always make a splash when he ‘spins’, so be sure to hop in line and get ready to dance the night away.

On Saturday morning, go for your weekly brunch at Fanny Chadwick‘s. This spot, on Dupont just east of Bathurst, boasts a farm fresh-style menu ready to sop up any Saturday morning hangover.

The COC’s latest, Tosca, opens on Saturday with a performance late afternoon. Puccini’s opera is, as all are, in very good creative hands with Canada’s famed Company. An afternoon of love, lust, and betrayal…the perfect Saturday, right?

Nota Bene is great spot for Saturday night noshing. Located right near a subway – so you can hop off and hop in without getting too nippy – this Italian-style restaurant has just brought back its suckling pig and boudin noir tart, a semi-famous offering. (FYI, boudin noir is a rich and earthy dark-hued blood sausage…so if you’re of the more standard fare-loving diner, opt for one of their standard delish dishes.)

Make believe you’re in Mexico and hit up Reposado Tequila Bar on Ossington. (We know, we know, it’s west again. Deal with it.) Sip tequila proper or shoot tequila slopper, and enjoy the night in the warmth of south-of-the-border thoughts.

For Sunday brunch, head over to Gallery Grill on the U of T campus. Serving up some delectable brunch creations, Gallery Grill is a must-try for brunchophiles if you’ve yet to pay the resto your patronage.

Sunday afternoon, four words that you can either run with or away from: Rob Ford The Opera. That’s all we’ll say, click here to learn more.
