Toronto Weekender: February 9 through 12, 2012

It’s Thursday, which means the YP weekend has officially begun. It’s going to be a bit nippy Saturday and Sunday, but that’s no reason to stay in with flicks and soups…unless you’re so inclined, that is. Here’s what’s up this weekend in the city…

Tonight’s the last night of Winterlicious, so you might as well take advantage and grab a reservation at one of our favourite spots, like Volos, Sen5es, or Trevor. Click here for our full rundown of fave spots during the prix fixe festival.

Tonight’s big event is the Love a Heart auction for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. A bevy of single gals and guys are on the block this year, and between bidding and boozing this is sure to be a night you won’t soon forget.

On Friday, grab a seat at Guu Sakabar with the crew and down some Sapporo or sake while noshing out on Japanese tapas/share plates. The energy is always frenetic and a good time to be had.

Since your energy will be sky-high, head over to Comedy Bar in the Annex for Chris Hardwick aka The Nerdist’s Toronto show. The Nerdist spawned a slew of appearances, some shows, and more thanks to wry wit, and it’s definitely a Friday night worthy of any YP.

On Saturday morning, head to one of our favourite brunch spots, Lola’s Kitchen, and order up a decadent post-Friday meal of whatever you can handle. Stuffed French Toast? They got it. Eggs Benny with a twist? That’s there too. Fill up and fuel up for the rest of the day.

Butterfly Bakery is hosting a Valentine’s Sweets and Chocolates Tour in Kensington Market on Saturday. Join the tour and sample some tasty confections while learning more about the origins of sweets and VDay.

Check out new Queen West spot URSA for dinner on Saturday. This is the brainchild of brothers Jacob and Lucas Sharkey Pearce, best known for their high-nutrion and gastronomical dishes loved by professional athletes.

Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience premiers Saturday night, and has gotten fantastic reviews for its English tour. This parody of all things wizard/muggle is playing at the Panasonic Theatre near Yonge and Bloor, and is a romp worth watching.

The 8th Annual MAD About You Gala is also on Saturday night, raising funds for the Mood Disorders Association of Ontario. Tix are costly but go to a great cause, and the Carlu is always the perfect setting for a swanky affair.

On Sunday morning pop on over to House on Parliament for your brunch fix. The plates are huge, the prices low, and the draft beers are plenty.

Spend the day running your errands, then wind up on Roncey in the evening and check out Hopgood’s Foodliner. Chef Geoff Hopgood, formerly of the Black Hoof Cafe, named his Atlantic/Nova Scotia-inspired spot after his family’s chain of grocery stores. Seafood, anyone?
