The Tunnel to Billy Bishop Airport to Open on Thursday

For as much as everyone love Porter Airlines, we’ve all probably found ourselves cursing the ferry more than once.

Well, come Thursday (July 30), you’ll now be able to walk over to Billy Bishop Airport via an underwater tunnel – surely good news to those of us prone to running late for flights…and not into swimming for them.

Compared to relying on the ferry that departs every 15 minutes, the walk through the tunnel from the mainland to the airport’s check-in area is expected to take six minutes. The passageway will be able to transport 1,100 people per hour.

If the ferry is part of Billy Bishop’s charm for you, not to worry – it will continue to operate.

The tunnel took three years to construct and came with a price tag of $82.5 million. It was funded using airport improvement fees tacked on to airline tickets.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on July 30 at 11am to celebrate the opening of the tunnel.
