Runway Monthly Spurs Calgary’s Fashion Scene

Calgary’s fashion scene just keeps growing. After considerable success in April and May, the June edition of Runway Monthly brought Calgary’s fashion-loving YPs out in droves. For those who have yet to attend, Runway Monthly is a new fashion event in Calgary. Similar to other fashion events, Runway Monthly features local clothing and accessory designers and boutiques. Where they are distinct, however, is that they are also working closely with some of Calgary’s best stylists to showcase their notable styling skills.

The event is held at The Bank on Stephen Avenue SW, a beautiful space that is well-suited to the aims of the night: to inspire fashion-loving guests to connect with clothing and accessory collections that are neither too casual or too upscale, and to find style inspiration for their wardrobe, whether it is for work or play. Prior to the event and during intermission, guests were able to sip on cocktails and wine while browsing the Trunk Show, which displayed the work of Adorie JewelsMackenzie JonesAnne B AccessoriesTaisa Anderson Designs, and Couture Gown Studio

The runway show began with the latest collection by Cherry Chic Designs, which featured Western-inspired pieces that would be perfect for both work and weekend wear, especially with Stampede right on our heels.

Next up was Chantel Traub’s dress collection, which focused on vibrant handprinted, dyed, and painted fabrics. Among our favourites was a shift dress that is printed with Calgary’s skyline. All outfits were accessorized with clutches and hats by Nuage 9.

Following intermission, the runway was taken over by Malika Couture’s dress collection. This collection included many pieces that would be perfect for a dinner and dancing with friends. We were also quite taken with a tailored orange dress that would work well for a YP who works in a fashion forward office or industry.

Closing the show was apiana que, which we loved for the bright colours and vibrant patterns that are so often missing from the typically black-obsessed wardrobe. Although the purple shift dress might be a bit short for the office, it could work if it was paired with tights or leggings during the cooler weather.

Expect bigger and better things to come from Runway Monthly as it moves into the second half of the first season, for which the women behind the event series have some pretty stellar plans in the works. If we could make one suggestion: how about some appetizers? Food or no food, we’re hooked; watch for us at the next Runway Monthly event, Saturday, August 18, at 8pm at The Bank featuring designers Lauren Rebecca, Anji K., Beatrix, and stylist BR Pirri. Tickets go on sale in July.
