One to Watch: Abe and Mary’s

Abe and Mary’s has been around since 2006, and the boutique is just as awesome now as when they first launched – if not better. The fashion house we all know and love has become more than just a premier fashion destination. It now caters to healthy foodies, fashionistas, bargainistas and a prominent charity. This week I had a great time chatting with Michelle Paluzzi, the PR specialist at SeCe Apparel, who walked me through the eclectic shop and shared some of the boutique’s core values such as the , which has brought the Montreal community closer. Of course we also spoke fashion, gushing over the season’s must-have trends, and one hot sale you won’t want to miss.

How does the Abe and Mary’s boutique set itself apart from the rest?
We carry some very unique brands such as Vince, Parker, UGG, Ash, Molton Brown, etc. But the boutique has also become a family affair where people can enjoy a more laid back shopping experience; our healthy salad bar now offers free wifi, and feels like a cozy hangout. Not to mention, the successful launch of L’Atelier 1958 in April has contributed in raising funds and awareness for the MKC Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Tell us a little more about the foundation and how L’Atelier 1958 contributes to this cause.
Catherine, the owner of SeCe Apparel and Abe & Mary’s, recently lost both of her parents to Alzheimer’s disease. She had established the Mary Katz Claman Foundation in 2005 to raise awareness and help support prevention. Our warehouse was overflowing with samples that were all in great condition, so we thought it would be a great opportunity to sell the coveted pieces for less and contribute a percentage of our proceeds to the MKC Foundation. Thus, L’Atelier 1958 was then born.

Can we expect to find the latest trends at L’Atelier 1958?
Yes! We replenish weekly. All items on the rack are of the season and in mint condition, at a fraction of the price. Of course, a portion of our sales go to the MKC foundation in support of the Alzheimer’s Risk Assessment Clinic located at the Montreal Jewish General Hospital.

How has The MKC Foundation been successful and what are the next steps?
The Mary Katz Claman Foundation contributes to the development of preventative research, leads in promoting Alzheimer’s awareness to today’s youth, and supports the search for a cure. We also hope to one day finance the development of a freestanding centre for the families of those afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, providing support that will help ease the burden. This goal came about in learning that most of those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease live at home, and that most of their care is provided by families and friends. The MKC facility would provide a comfortable environment with services that address the specific needs of the patients and their families alike.

What can we expect to see on the racks this fall?
Oversized sweaters, such as the Vince fur number; it’s comfy, versatile and luxe! Rebecca Taylor has some great pieces this season in warm hues such as plum and taupe. Black and white is another trend that’s carrying over into fall.
