Notable Now Calgary: March 7, 2014

Sled Island
One of the best things about Calgary is the Sled Island Music Festival that takes place every June. The headliners for 2014 were just announced this week and this year’s line up is already showing promise with stellar acts like Neko Case, Joel Plaskett, Chelsea Wolfe and Killer Mike. Festival passes are now on sale, so buy your tickets and start dreaming about summer afternoons in Olympic Plaza with a cold beer and your bicycle. Discovery Passes can be purchased online here.

The Big Taste
Here’s a chance to eat your way through the city. Calgary’s best restaurants will be serving up their specialty dishes from March 7th to 16th, and if you’re looking for a recommendation, stop by Ki Modern Japanese Restaurant on 4th Avenue SW. The tasting menu includes hamachi jalapeno and truffle maguro rice cake, miso soup and your choice of seared Pacific salmon, sous-vide chicken breast or grilled flat iron steak. The sampling menu is $35, and for an additional $25 Ki will provide pairings with each course. To check out all the details for the Big Taste, click here.

Rumour of Fire
From March 12th to 15th, Theatre Junction and Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol (Lizards Basking in the Sun) will be presenting the Rumour of Fire, a play that explores a darker part of Mexico’s history remembered most infamously as “The Dirty War.” This production is based on real-life events; camera footage and accounts from the people who lived and fought in the revolution that forever changed the nation’s social and political landscape. On March 13th and 14th, there will be a chance to engage with the artists following the show. Please note the performance will be in Spanish with English subtitles. 403.205.2922.

Crowbar
As part of the City Palate’s 20 for 20 series, the CrowBar will be hosting a lounge night on March 13th. Head Bartender Wade Sirois will be teaching everyone how to shake, stir and muddle classic drinks like Champagne cocktails, the Old Fashioned, the Manhattan, Clover Clubs and the Brazilian Caipirinha. The Crowbar Lounge is located in Forage Catering (3508 19th Street SW) and will be open from 7:30pm to 9pm. Tickets are $80.

PARKSHOW 2014
The 2014 PARKSHOW will be taking place at the NGA Golf Dome on March 15th (50 50th Avenue SW). Before the runway begins, guests will have a chance to visit the exclusive pop-up shops and view the art installations on display. Audience members will get to see the latest in spring looks and trends from designers like EG Forge, Kazz Clothing, Bano eeMee, CAMP Brand Goods, LUXX and SUKA Clothing. Doors will open at 7pm and the fashion show will start at 9pm sharp.

Songwriting Contest
Last call for musicians, singers and songwriters! The 11th Annual Ship & Anchor + Calgary Folk Festival Songwriting Contest is closing March 15th at 11:59 pm. There will be over $25,000 in prizes given away to winners in this year’s categories, which include Sonic Youth (artists under 17), Beaver Tales (inspired by the Canadian experience) and the Untapped Newcomer (for aspiring musicians who are still trying to get their first big break). Applications can be found online here or picked up from the Ship and Anchor Pub. Who knows, you could be the next Neil Young.
