Notable Now Calgary: July 18, 2014

Wicked
Starting on July 23rd, Calgary is in for some wicked fun with the return of the smash success Broadway show Wicked. Described as a cultural phenomenon, this is the tale of a girl with green skin who grows up a little misunderstood. For all of you who remember watching the Wizard of Oz as a kid, this is kind of like a prequel to everything that happened before Dorothy and Toto made it over the rainbow. You’ll love the back-story on how the Wicked Witch of the West rose to such notoriety. For tickets and show times at the Jubilee Auditorium you can visit the website.

Motion Notion
This festival is a great time if electronic music and camping are your thing. Motion Notion takes place from the 24th to the 28th of July in Golden, British Columbia, which is roughly three hours from Calgary. The 2014 line up includes music from Stickybuds, Nick Thayer and the Funk Hunters. There will also be tons of great artists, food vendors and theatrical performances happening throughout the weekend. Getting back to nature has never been so much fun. For tickets, camping information and directions, click here.

Stargazing
From July 24th to 26th you can do a little stargazing at the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory that’s located in Priddis (only a short drive from Calgary). If conditions are good then you’ll have the exciting opportunity to see a variety of nebula, clusters and other random phenomenon associated with the Milky Way. These are very informal evenings, and while there won’t be any lecture during viewings, the staff will still be referencing points of interest in the night sky. The observatory is open from 10pm to 2am and admission is by donation.

Taste of Okotoks
On July 26th, Okotoks is hosting a quaint little foodie festival, a perfect option if you’re in need of ideas for spending a Saturday out of town. The Taste of Okotoks coincides with the town’s weekly summer street festival so you can also see what’s on display at the market and hear some live music as you sample delicious foods, drinks and desserts. If you’re planning on attending, the event will be on from 10am to 3pm.

Take Off Your Clothes
That’s right. Now that we have your attention, we can tell you about an unusual but totally fun event happening at the Sheraton on July 26th. This is a high-end clothes-swapping event and in exchange for some of your fancier second-hand items where the price of admission ($15) lets you shop to your heart’s content. In order to participate you’ll want to read through the website as the instructions for what can be exchanged and when you have to be supply your own items are quite specific.

Broken Bells
On August 6th Broken Bells will be playing at Jack Singer Concert Hall. Even if you’ve never heard this duo, you still have time to give their music a listen and buy a ticket. Simply put, Broken Bells is made up of two guys with a whole lot of talent. Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) has produced albums for everyone from Norah Jones and Beck to the Black Keys and Jack White, while James Mercer has had a very successful run with the indie rock band known as The Shins. Together the pair has racked up more awards than you could fit on your mantle top. If you’ve already heard of these guys then you’ve probably had your ticket for months, so consider this a friendly reminder.
