Notable Now Calgary: August 1, 2014

Collector’s Club
If you love pop-up shops and curious gift items then you probably know about the Collector’s Club that happens at the Commonwealth Bar every few months. The next installment of this super sweet market is taking place on Sunday, August 10 from 1 to 6pm and admission is only $3 with all proceeds going to charity. Hunt for handmade jewelry, find those great vintage accessories or dig out those classic and hard-to-find records for your collection. Beyond finding cool objects you’ll get to listen to a few DJs spinning Sunday afternoon tracks while you sip on mimosas.

Arcade Fire
On August 12, the bizarre cyclone of musical talent and charade we know as Arcade Fire is touching down in Calgary to play at the Scotiabank Saddledome. If you haven’t purchased tickets yet, make sure to act fast as these tickets won’t be around much longer. It’s also important to note that a dress code is in effect for the show, meaning that you should plan to dress up or wear something a little ridiculous. If you’ve already got your tickets and outfit then you can just start getting excited because DJ phenomenon Dan Deacon along with Tune Yards will be opening the show.

No Kids!
We love Telus Spark Nights because it’s one of those wonderful events that gives people access to a space that is generally reserved for the 12 and under crowd. August 14 is the second Thursday of the month, which means that the science centre enforces a no kids policy from 6pm to 10pm. The theme of this adult night is focused on silk screening and registration is required ahead of time. If you’ve never tried this activity, it’s definitely worth the trip. You can sign up by visiting the website.

Opera In The Village
The second annual Opera in the Village kicks off on August 14th and runs until the 23rd. For the next few weeks of August, the East Village will come alive with music, crowds and a big top tent. This year the festival will showcase Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. This popular opera regales audiences with the story of a young man whose adventures take him on a perilous trip with the Bulgarian army, face to face with the Spanish Inquisition, and onto the high seas as he searches for his lover. If you enjoyed last year’s Pirates of Penzance, then you’ll be happy to return.

White Party
There’s nothing quite like this impromptu picnic that features pop up-gourmet food, great conversation and brilliant outfits for one night only. Diner en Blanc is happening again on September 4th and you’re invited to see what all the fuss is about. This high-class affair is a fun opportunity for you and your friends to get done up in all white while enjoying an incredible meal in a location that will be kept secret right up until the event happens. Sign up now and begin preparing in advance. You’ll want to make sure you read through the website so you’re prepared. Bon appétit!

Mad Decent
One of the best DJ parties of 2014 is coming next month to Shaw Millennium Park for one day only. Mad Decent returns this September 5th and Calgary is one of 22 exciting stops that features hit DJs like Dillon Francis, Flosstradamus, RJD2 and Zeds Dead. This is going to be one heck of a party for you and a few thousand of your closest friends. For more details on the full line-up and the set times, you can visit the website. Stay tuned for more fun details to come.
