Notable Now Calgary: April 11, 2014

Get Possessed
This Saturday (April 12th) you can dance the night away with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks’ annual gala that is taking place at Hotel Arts. The Possessed gala will feature the sounds of R&B, Funk, Motown and live DJ music. In the effort to shake up the usual gala scene in Calgary, this will prove to be an evening to remember.

You’ll love the DJD dance performances, auction items and delicious assortment of snacks. Come dressed in your funkiest outfit and be prepared to let the good times roll. Tickets are $110 and the gala begins at 8pm.

Calgary Underground Film Festival
CUFF is only running until the 13th of April. Don’t miss out on a fantastic opportunity to see a brilliant selection of shorts, documentaries, dramas and more at one of the city’s premiere film events. If you haven’t heard, there will be a Saturday morning cartoon party with all the memorable retro programs from 1960 to 1980 with non-stop cereal. Pajamas are welcome. www.calgaryundergroundfilm.org

Roots and Shoots
Don’t miss Slow Food Calgary’s annual celebration of terroir, which is taking place on April 14th at the River Cafe. Roots and Shoots is a joint production amongst chefs from across the city bringing you a special dinner that features the top ingredients that local suppliers produce during the season. You’ll get to sample the very best regional cuisine from chefs Andrew Winfield of River Cafe, Jamie Harling of Rouge, Dan Labutes of Chef’s Table and Dave Bohati of Market. Dinner starts at 6pm and is $125 for members/$160 for non-members.

Punk Rock Bingo
Hurray for summertime! Well maybe it’s a tad early to start celebrating, but patio weather has definitely arrived. Enjoying a few drinks and snacks on the sunny south-facing Ship and Anchor patio followed by a game of Punk Rock Bingo on Tuesday night is probably one of the best ways to rejoice in the fact that winter is now behind us. Grab some buddies, order a round and try your luck with a bingo dabber at everyone’s favourite watering hole on 17th Avenue. You’ll thank yourself on Wednesday.

The No Name
Do you have a knack for naming things? Bar C is having a competition to name their cocktail (aptly titled the “No Name Yet” cocktail). Until May 7th the public is invited to come up with a crafty signature that best describes this sensational mix of Madera 5+5 rum, Frangelico and Cynar (a 13-herb Italian liqueur). If you have a brilliant suggestion, submit your idea online and the reason for choosing it. If your name is selected you’ll be spending two nights at one of the three prestigious CRMR hotels. For contest rules, you can visit. #NoNameYet

Odysseo Cavalia
Are you ready for the ultimate equestrian experience? You’ll feel as though you’re floating through a dream when you’re seated under the Odysseo Cavalia big top. This production celebrates the majestic beauty of horses – 14 different breeds to be exact – including the Arabian, Appaloosa, Spanish Purebred and Percheron. An evening under one of the biggest tents in the world involves marvelous performances by musicians, acrobats, dancers and skilled riders. You’ll delight in the cast’s command of the horses, the beautiful carousel and a lake that seems to appear out of thin air. Odysseo Cavalia begins on April 23rd. 1-866-999-8111.
