New to 17th Avenue: Ox and Angela

Recently, 17th Avenue welcomed Ox and Angela to the strip (528 – 17th Ave SW). The latest concept by owners Steve Smee, Jayme MacFayden, and Kelly Black (they also own Una Pizza) brings YPs the latest in tapas-style dining – though, they have done it with expectantly refreshing flare. The food is Latin American inspired and you can’t help but think of countries like Argentina, Peru and Brazil while you’re mid-nosh.

The name Ox and Angela represents the masculine and feminine sides of Latin American culture, and the concept has been used throughout the restaurant. The space has been transformed and features bright white walls, dark leather banquets, wooden beams and rustic touches. To further play up the moniker, there’s a split in the space: On one side you have the cozy dining room (Angela) and on the other you’ve got the inviting bar with a lighter menu and hip vibe (Ox).

With such a fantastic location and even better menu, Ox and Angela has opened to rave reviews and has become a frequent hot spot for Calgary Notables. Not too shabby for just a few weeks’ time. For your next night out with friends, make a reservation in the dining room, where the tapas styling lets you all share in the flavours and experience. We suggest you try the shaved zucchini with crushed almond, and mint queso fresco, but also consider coming in early and enjoying a pre-dinner signature cocktail in Ox, where we guarantee you are bound to run into someone you know.

The dining room stays open until 11pm, while the bar continues serving until 2am. So whether it’s a full dinner you’re after or late evening nibbles and cocktails, Ox and Angela is sure to fit the bill.
