Must Try: Banff’s Bison Restaurant

Ah, 2014; a great time to head out to the mountains and recharge your batteries before work dominates your 9 to 5 (and beyond) again. In 90 minutes you can be in Banff and feel like you’re far away from the city.

The ski hill is always a great form of therapy in Banff, but if you’ re just looking to treat yourself to a day of relaxation you can spend a few hours at the Banff Hot Springs.  The hot pool offers a majestic view of the mountains surrounding Banff and the hot water will work wonders on any aches or pains.

If you only have a night in Banff, then you definitely should try the Bison Restaurant for dinner, featuring a menu at that focuses on regional and seasonal cuisine with a wide range of options. Located above the Tavern pizzeria on Bear Street, the Bison is a rustic space with an open kitchen and a cozy atmosphere. The space caters to both large parties and more intimate dining experiences.

The Caesar salad is a great pick for appetizers if you’re looking for something familiar. Bison also serves Bone Marrow Escargot and Oxtail Soup for starters if you feel like trying something different.

The mains include generous portions that are beautifully presented. The Carmen Creek Bison Short Ribs are probably the most popular on the dinner menu, while the Broek Acres Pork Chops and Butternut Squash Gnocchi are also delicious options.

For dessert, you have to try the Pumpkin Pie, which comes with a toasted marshmallow on top. The plate also includes candied bacon that sits on a dollop of cream and chocolate that is finished off with a maple whiskey sauce. The bacon is surprisingly good with desert – as if we even doubted it.
