Montreal Weekender: November 28 to December 1, 2013

THURSDAY
This Thursday we’re continuing with the third installment of “The Notable Merchants.” In case you haven’t been, here’s all you need to know: it’s the hottest après-work soiree you’ll find anywhere the city. Last week, old friends, fresh-faced newbies, and young professionals (YPs) from all over MTL packed the house to network, socialize, and sip on some well-deserved libations. This week we’re bringing you tequila and Stewart’s Happy Hour, free tacos from 5 till 7, Mister Josh Silver running the Movember donation bar (back by popular demand), Cyber Relief with the best graphics and the finest selection of oysters supplied by our favourite seafood specialists, Mothershuckers. Come early, trust us.

If something fancier is up your alley, Hotel Nelligan rolls out the blue carpet for the boys, marking the first ever Bow Tie Affair. The event benefits PROCURE, a Quebec-based organization taking on the fight against prostate cancer. Held in the property’s elegant ballroom, the soirée invites both ladies and gentlemen to sport their snazziest knots for a dapper evening of cocktails, music and gourmet food stations. Tickets are $125 each and 100% of the evening’s proceeds go to PROCURE.

FRIDAY
Our dear friends at the Gros Jambon, Old Montreal’s coolest and yummiest diner, are hosting their 2nd year anniversary… and you know what that means right? Free fried chicken, baby! Indeed, from 6 to 9pm, pop by, say hi, take in some real oldies and munch away on some of the finest fried poulet around.

We’ve been fighting the good fight as loyal members of Gen Mo for the past month and the troops are rallying for the official Gala Parté at Théâtre Rialto to mark the end. Judges will be roaming the crowd looking for various mo category nominees from 9-10pm, with judging for category winners taking place at 10:30pm. After the stache-off has taken place, guests will dance the night away with DJ Funkward and DJ Midas. Get those mos ready to party!

SATURDAY
Since winter is here a little early this year, the Old Port’s skating rink is opening today. Take in some fresh air along the shores of the St. Lawrence and skate to the sounds of their thematic musical evenings starting at 6pm all season long; a nice way to kick-start the chilly season!

It’s a perfect night to go check out new Griffintown hot spot Le Richmond. Having just opened and already generating a lot of buzz, Le Richmond occupies an industrial space that dates back to the 1800s, with decor that marries the building’s original materials with more contemporary finishes. The restaurant’s polished menu features and is designed around local and regional products with a very refined selection from seafood to meat and even vegetarian offerings.

SUNDAY
Get ready to strip down to your unmentionables in the name of men’s health. Old Port’s Philemon Bar is hosting a No Pants Party for Movember. All you need to do is bring your fine behind to the party and, of course, Movember donations are very welcome. A notable tip? No thongs please; let’s keep it classy in the name of this great cause.  #NoPantsMoParty all night, YPs!

A classical genius needs a celebration right? Well Verdi is that genius and he is being celebrated today at Opera De Montreal to commemorate the opera giant’s birth. Excerpts from his hits and rarities will be heard around the grandiose walls, such as Giovanna d’Arco, Luisa Miller, I Lombardi, La forza del destino, Don Carlo, Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra, Aida, Trovatore, Otello, Falstaff and more. An opera lover’s dream.
