Montreal Weekender: May 9 through 12, 2013

THURSDAY
Let’s start Thursday with an exclusive VIP sneak peek of a brand new endeavour in Old Montreal. JOVERSE, a cuisine bar catering to a trendier and mature young professional crowd, will be open for guestlisters to catch what the talk has been all about lately. On the completely other end of the spectrum, the 18th edition of the Montreal Chamber Music Festival starts tonight and will welcome renowned artists including the Emerson, Fine Arts and Cecilia String Quartets, the musicians of the Boston Chamber Music Society, pianists Jean-Philippe Collard and Christina Ortiz, violinists Rachel Barton Pine and more. The TD Jazz series returns with, among others, the 50th anniversary celebration concert of the Swingle Singers and pianists Oliver Jones and Eldar Djangirov. So if you’re a classical music fan like us, this has to be on your social calendar.

FRIDAY
The 2013 Sugar Ball is the event of the night and will welcome more than 600 young professionals at the heritage Entrepôts Dominion. The evening will honour the upcoming exhibition From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly – Beyond the Icon presented at the McCord Museum in June. With a theme inspired by 1950s Montreal, the night will highlight the iconic elements of the city and the silver screen’s golden age glamour with a contemporary spin on decor, food, and music. All proceeds will help the McCord Museum protect, preserve, and promote your heritage, so let’s support this beautiful cause.

No More Radio and The Rialto Theatre are proud to present 360 SPIN ON ART featuring musical guests Ol’ Savannah, Irreverend James and the Critical Mass Choir and Emily Rajotte. The night will also feature a Confabulation story from Jeff Gandell, a stand-up set from DeAnne Smith, brand new sketches from Montreal’s Uncalled For, beautiful interactive art installations and more. This will be No More Radio’s first annual fundraiser. The podcasts that are produced on No More Radio are created by the amazing hosts, who do so without getting paid – support local talent!

SATURDAY
Whether you are an avid vintage shopper or just a bit curious, the third edition of Happening Vintage OldWIG is the place to complete your spring wardrobe of clothing, accessories and vintage jewelry in addition to several beautiful deco elements… all of this taking place in a unique atmosphere! You will discover treasures, cocktails, music, art and shopping all coexisting in a single location, the Bain Mathieu a 30-year-old pool. Shop away, YPs!

Who doesn’t love a random pop-up party? The SaintWoods “Pop-Up Party” series is inspired by the monotony of the average weekend. Their aim is to push the boundaries and bring a sense of excitement and adventure back to nightlife by showcasing new music in unconventional venues. This is their first installment of many to come during the summer. Capacity is limited and tickets are flyin’!

SUNDAY
After touring Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, with two runs at The New Victory Theatre on Broadway, The Number 14 and its busload of weird and wacky characters are coming to the Centaur Theatre! The hilarious performers in this comedy will entertain and amaze with their wild shenanigans using acrobatics, song, mime and the imaginative use of masks. Who are these characters? Some include an inebriated schoolteacher, strangers who fall in lust, and an off-the-wall real estate agent to name a few.

“Dress up your GENES”, and join HBOC for a fabulous Monday evening at Cinemas Guzzo Spheretech. As always, the night will consist of fabulous food from a long list of Montreal’s famous caterers and restaurants, a silent auction, live auction, entertainment, a choice of Hollywood films followed by dessert, and their ever-popular gift bag, ending your evening with a little treat! Last year’s HBOC event was a huge success! Over 600 people were in attendance, and $155,000 was raised, bringing HBOC’s total income to approximately $1.2 Million so come support this wonderful cause!
