Montreal Weekender: April 17 through 20, 2014

THURSDAY
Hip-Hop Karaoke Montreal is back at Le Belmont on Thursday April 17, but before you head over to make your grand debut or cheer on your palls, make your way to the newly opened Hip-Hop Cafe for an intimate 5 a 7 to connect with tastemakers from across the city. There will be delicious beverages and light snacks available via Olivier Brault, music by Puggy, and surprise performances.

Then head over to the one and only Hip-Hop Karaoke at Le Belmont. Hip-Hop Karaoke Montreal is a monthly event celebrating hip-hop music in an entertaining, collaborative, and inclusive environment. This event is not only for hip-hop fans, but also for people seeking a unique, cultural experience in Montreal. See nerds, teachers, b-boys, your neighbour and people from every walk of life take on their favourite hip-hop track and showcase those deeply hidden skills. Trust us, you’ll be surprised.

Sid Lee Collective, in collaboration with MassivART, presents HABITAT. After a great success in Miami in 2013, the event stops in Montreal for a double exhibit at Espace MASSIVart and C2MTL. Regrouping more than 10 artists, this photo, video, and installation exhibit is showing the link between people and their habitats. It’s an awesome exhibit featuring world-class artists and DJs spinning the night away.

FRIDAY
Les Enfants Sauvages, a Montreal-based studio that works with fabrics from different cultures, is hosting an epic little cocktail soiree tonight featuring everything that you would want on a Friday night: a big clothing sale, live bands, DJs and, of course, drinks. Taking place at Espace Projet art contemporain + design (353 rue Villeray), kicking off at 5 pm, this is the perfect time to explore this local brand and have a whole lot of fun while doing it.

Rock n’ roll baby! That’s right, Led Zeppelin cover band Kashmir is in town at Club Soda to tear the roof off all the classics you will want to head bang to like ‘Whole lotta love’, ‘Black Dog’, ‘Ramble on’ and more. These guys are no joke; Robert Plant might just be re-incarnated tonight.

SATURDAY
After over four weeks of dedication and hard work, Old Montreal’s Club PEOPL is officially re-launching their space. To show their appreciation for all the love and support, this will be a celebration like no other. It’ll showcase Montreal’s finest talent behind the decks, both Friday & Saturday night, representing the true essence of house music. To spoil us even more, they order a plethora of champagne and oysters for everyone that pops by. How’s that for a notable launch?

Honestly, you can never go wrong when checking out a production at the Centaur Theatre. In its newest hit, “4000 Miles,” is a story that centers on learning the art of growing up and growing old. “4000 Miles” is a funny and moving play that dignifies old age and illuminates the healing power of companionship and intergenerational relationships. A fantastic production that comes with a long trail of five-star reviews.

The Imperial Loft Green Team would like to invite residents and friends of the Imperial Lofts to join them today at 11am until 1pm to clean up the vicinity of their condo. The goal is to clean and sweep sidewalks and remove garbage along rue Bourget, Irene, Saint Antoine, Rose De Lima, and St Jacques. This is a way for everyone to tackle the issues of cleanliness in the St.Henri vicinity. Meeting location is at 3700 saint antoine (phase 5) at 11am, bring your best cleaning suits!

SUNDAY
Well, here is something to give you a good excuse to avoid Easter dinner with the crazy in-laws (if that’s your case). Each year, from Easter Thursday to Sunday, the White Party Week proposes five nights of celebration that reach their apex with the White Party mega-event presented tonight. Music, fashion, dance and design are at the forefront during this event that celebrates diversity and openness of mind. Some of the mega DJs spinning include Carl Cox, Hardwell, Nicole Moudaber and much more. Make sure you rock your best summer whites and come caffeinated; this will be a LONG night.

Craving something that won’t require you to pull those glow sticks out? Head over to the ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ exhibit at the Salle d’exposition at Place Des Arts, honouring Nelson Mandela through images and stories. It’s the perfect occasion to take a look at some key moments in South African history and transport visitors back to the era of apartheid showcased through various artistic exhibits remembering the inspirational legacy Nelson Mandela has left behind.
